Hello. I’m currently doing an MSCS at the same school I got my BS (Cal) I interning at databricks this summer and was supposed to finish my MSCS over the fall (5 months), however I’ve heard from past interns at Cal that they lets you just join databricks post intern if I withdraw from my MSCS as well (if you get an offer) or finish the MSCS then join. Is this a bad career move? I feel like getting into databricks early might be more ideal than getting an MSCS degree (I’ve taken the important grad class I wanted to take) Was hoping to get to more ML roles with the MSCS (I do SWE atm) but that also seems possible internally from within DB. #databricks
If they found you promising, they ll wait for a year. Finish your masters first. You ll have more opportunities after a year.
And this should be a poll

My inclination would be just take the job and don’t finish, but you could always see if A.) there’s any upside in an offer letter if you finish and B.) if you can always come back and finish in a year if you wanted to / take evening classes
Take the job , Finish it part time !
Cal doesn’t allow this. Also my location for DB is Seattle so it wouldn’t work
OP - can't you transfer completed credits to another university program and finish your degree part-time somewhere else?
What team are you assigned to for your internship? Btw I also graduated from Berkeley. But warning that 99% of teams at DB do not do any interesting ML-related work at all. Feel free to dm me
We are not assigned yet, but I feel like I could transition internally or in industry.
Join them! Always can finish later if you want to
Do both full time for a bit. Suck it up and fly in for the exams.
MSCS is a waste of time
I would strongly suggest finishing your MS. 5 months is nothing in your years long career. Believe it or not, everyone looks at your education qualifications. At DB, many people including founders are phd. please complete your education, don’t be greedy for 5 months salary unless you have some financial situation.
PhD is meaningful. Masters programs are degree mills for visa people. It’s correct that this is looked at. negatively. i would not say that 5 months is nothing. 5 months of actual work experience is way more valuable than the MS degree. in more of a buyers market i would probably go for the degree but in this market i would take the bird in the hand. it’s also not an either or. OP can do the masters later or transfer the credits to a school where he can finish it part time
Don't do a PhD if you're not looking for a career in a academia.
