Slack is pretty comfortable to tag someone and get their high attention. People who find few groups useless can have them unstarred or not mark as priority. I can prioritize channels and groups (which could be done in emails as well. but when I’m subscribed to multiple confluence pages, my email inbox becomes noisy). If I start a company, I would prefer to have all info via Slack. Email is just a backup when slack goes down. For broadcasting company wide news, we can have dedicated groups for that. For surveys, GitHub commits, reviews we can create threads and tag people. For putting someone on PIP, create a discrete group(but don’t name it as PIP_employeeA_3month_track). Else use email for this purpose. What are your thoughts? #tech
Slack is more distraction than you need . It has poor status features , lack of outlook integration , no read receipts . The notifications are borderline annoying unless they are muted. Why in the world would you wreck everyone's peace with slack ? How would you interact with customers on slack without federation ?
Why do you care about read receipts?
Yes. Read receipt is missing in slack. Agreed. But “customers” is not “within” tech company. When I say within tech company, I mean employees like IT, PM, engineers, C-level, managers etc.
Yes please stop emailing me. It was a good technology but now is basically just used as a todo list and needs to be sunset.
Just swipe left
Nah. Companies have tried it and it doesn’t work in a large scale company. Amazon solely works in Slack. Still heavy dependence on email. Microsoft has the same issue with teams.
Seen it used at some companies. Did not like it at all. Too much noise and distraction. And yeah, all those garbage emails from confluence and other similar tools is an another headache, I normally filter them out to some folder to not clog the inbox. I find those chats useful when they actually used as chats. For something that requires immediate attention. "Hey, look here, quickly, there is an issue with prod". And I don't like when it is considered as a main way of communication.
You have way too much of free time
I hope that you do some serious growing up before you become a manager
I feel like I could get used to working in Slack only, but god some coworkers suck at keeping organized with just email, imagine what a disaster it’d be with slack. How many times have you heard “sorry it got lost in my inbox”?
There’s something official about email. I know I sound like a boomer but it’s just not the same. You can’t forward chat externally.
Customer facing? No. Internal? Yes. Except executives. They’re old white guys that want to send messages from their blackberry. And you only allow a certain type of person to work for you, because some people hate writing emails and chat. And chat replaces phone calls.
Nope
