Hi all, it seems like a lot of people in tech nowadays have a Masters Degree. I always thought people got one to land a job at big tech companies (Facebbok, Apple, Amazon, Google). is it really necesaary to get a Masters Degree once you already work at one of these tech companies? Is work experience better? Thanks in advance for positive input. TC: 190K
Probably not worth it. You already work at Amazon, that should be good enough to get an interview
better to have than not, you never know when the degree will be useful. Do a part time master if you can.
Probably not worth it. Might be if you want to make a change like back-end to AI/ML or whatever is hot in 2 years when you finish
It’s only necessary for those that need it for a visa.
Not necessary. If you want it for your academics , enjoy it or learn for a very specific job (ai , computational biology etc) maybe , but for the “average” sde bachelors is the way to go
Is your question really if it is “necessary?” Or is your question, can a masters be beneficial?
No Masters is only good if you are starting out in your career . I have rarely seen a job posting that said Masters or GTFO
Not mentioning in job description does not mean they do not care about it at all
My masters did nothing for me. Prestigious university with top grades. It maybe gets a recruiter to say “ah” but no interview has ever brought it up unless I go out of my way. They care about work experience
They did not bring it up do not mean they do not care about it. Their decision making is all after interview.
Hard to know if it was used in decision making, but I doubt it. It’s at the bottom of my resume. When I interview, I don’t look at school (or even the resume) at all. I just focus on work projects, the problem (algo, coding or design) and then how you interact during interview.
Useful to have for visa purposes, like H1B
Don’t be rude. TC or GTFO

Good boy. Now I can tell you no it’s definitely not worth it because you’re already at Amazon. You have to understand that some people do a masters degree just so they can end up at Amazon. If you really want to do a masters look at online programs that you can do concurrently while working. Some notable ones that stand out are Georgia Techs OMSCS or UIUC OMSCS.
