My friend who is a developer with 11 years experience, based in Atlanta has an offer on the table. $135K + options vested over 4 years with 2 years cliff (they haven’t told the exact number yet, but expecting $10K per year). He is offered a ‘Staff’ level in the hierarchy. - Is this a good offer? - is the work culture food at Home Depot? - anything else to be careful about?
Excellent. The chains they tie you ip with are a bit h eww avy but otherwose good
u ok there bro
That’s a pretty good salary for 11 years — I’m in ATL, and 120 for 2 years is outrageous. Most of the managers/architects I know have been getting TC in the 160-170 range. Home Depot doesn’t have a great culture rep historically, though I understand they’ve been working to improve it. It’s not a sweatshop, but it’s pretty blah corporate. People don’t tend to stay there more than a couple years. I didn’t consider it except as a fallback in my recent search — there are more exciting places to work, culturally and technically. (I work at one now, hiring engineers, DM for info.) It’s a solid offer though, and your friend could do a lot worse if s/he likes the manager and team.
I've been working at THD for about a year. That TC is solid. It's been my experience that they don't really give good raises to engineers(2% raise for my year end perf review - ouch). So I wouldn't expect any big raises while you wait for the stock to vest. If you like your manager/the engineers on your team it's good. If that changes it's not so good. It's also a pair programming shop which kinda sucks imo(again, dependant on the people on your team). They are a retail company with a tech dept, not a tech company. Not sure if that factors into your job search.
I'm in Atlanta and this is low. There are starting to be more companies that pay better.
Which ones?
Depends on team with THD, may be high or low TC. Work culture great some teams average other teams. Also, SSC or MTC can make big diffrnce for growth/politics/visibility
A friend of mine in ATL is getting $120k with 2 years experience so I think 135 for 11 is a bit low.
Thanks. Is this for Home Depot or some other? Is there any stock option for your friend?
Other. Yes he gets stock. But they're not public yet so it's Monopoly money.
