I'm considering joining Facebook but heard bad stories about Facebook work-life balance. Is working from 10-6pm and no email/work in after hours/weekends not possible at Facebook? I heard most teams work from 9-8pm and even after hours, is that true for most of the teams?
Crazy - if you want wlb , why would you leave G ?
I'm in a similar situation. I want to leave because 4th year cliff, -100k
Surely G has some provision to account for the 4yr cliff, given that people stay for much longer there typically?
It depends on the team. I move to fb this year and i dont have any issues with wlb. I am enjoying my work better than what it used to be in goog
What is your typical working hours?
What team/org do you work for?
It is for me. My hours are horrible. I usually work for an hour or so (8-9) before work, then from 945-445, and again from 7/730-11p. Last few weeks a lot of 2a nights.
Since you're not in eng, you could probably automate a lot of your job and not tell anyone. Food for thought
Cute. My job isn’t “marketing”. It’s a strategy function (I don’t know jack about marketing). I’m pretty sure what fb can automate- it already has.
How is wlb for engineers specifically?
Eng here, I work 10-6 most days. 11-4 Fridays. It comes down to knowing the most efficient ways to make valuable impact and delegating the rest. And finding a good team out of bootcamp I suppose.
What orgs or teams would you recommend?
What team??
You must be supremely focused/productive to pull off 10-6 weekdays only at FB. It's possible for some people who can prioritize well and work efficiently without distractions, but the work environment (e.g. Work FB) is really distracting. There's also oncall for most swe teams.
Light oncall, long rotation. It helps that the team’s code is stable and clean so there’s not really any firefighting to do day to day. What kind of distractions do you deal with? I think I’m coming from a different perspective since I don’t work on product.
I work 55-65 hours usually. WLB here isn't good
Unsurprisingly, wlb is what you make it to be. It is perfectly fine in my team. An eng does laser focus 10-5 and is 100% offline outside these hours. Most do 10-6 ish. One stays a bit longer like 11-8. The main differences are the distractions, i.e. how much time you waste with games for example. Our manager has been perfectly clear that it’s not expected to work more that 40h and if you do, it’s your choice, i.e. it’s perfectly fine to meet expectations (or more) with 40h. My normal is 9:30 to 6:30, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, and i was promoted last half. To optimize for wlb, pick a project without dependencies in offices in other time zones. Pick a manager that knows that this is not a sprint.
What team/org are you on? Any suggestions for teams with cross TZ dependencies?
To all the folks working more than 40 hours: why? Do you feel pressured? If so by who?
40h isn't enough time to make enough impact for PSC for most people. Getting a MM means you've got one foot out the door and 2 means you're out. E3 and E4 also have to do better than MA if they want to get promoted before Up or Out reaps them. All these things means most people will work more than 40 on average

BREAKING: Internal sources confirm another round of layoffs just hit emails at Tesla. For real.
Avoid FB if you care about WLB. No email after hours lol.. that won’t happen at FB. I have been at 2 teams so far and it’s fucking same everywhere. I do 9.00-7.00 typically, or 45-50 hours / week.
Productive, or just hanging out cause everyone else is? If productive, how do you stay focused? Tons of meeting as breaks from code or something?
No time for “hanging out”. I count meetings as part of work, yes we have meetings.
