Hey Blinders, Just got this offer from Workday for a software engineering role. This is my first real tech offer (been in consulting and at a small boutique firm prior) so I would love your insights and any advice you may have. Level: P3 Base: $130,000 Equity: $130,000 RSU / 4 years (25% / year, refreshers every year besides year 1) Annual Bonus: 10% yearly cash bonus Signing bonus: None Location: Atlanta, GA YoE: 3 I got the inkling this may be a lowball offer, but I'm not entirely sure. I've only referenced levels.fyi so far, other resources appreciated. #engineering #software #swe #workday #offer
Is this software application engineer or software development engineer? Looks like a good offer so would take it regardless. But software application engineer is not really true coding. Might not give you valuable experience if your goal is to become a true software engineer
Great point. It’s a software development engineer position. I know SWEs at Workday get a bad rep for just using their proprietary XpressO framework to drag and drop, but this team mostly uses Java, and only occasionally interfaces with XpressO
Which team is this? Some engineers are having their titles changed from software application engineer to software development engineer, even if their role remains mostly XO
For what Workday generally pays new hires in that market, the base is probably 10-20k lower than what I would have expected. But still not a bad offer for your YoE and your location. RSUs look reasonable.
Appreciate your insight. Levels.fyi also has it about 30k higher than my offer. Should I ask for that number (30k higher) or overshoot (i.e. 50k more?) In the hopes they’ll settle in the middle? (≈$166,000)? Is it easier to try to get them to raise RSUs?
It doesn't hurt to ask 20k-30k more. As for asking 50k more, hard to predict their reaction to that. But definitely do 20-30k.
130k base for P3 looks good based on you location. As far as I know, Workday doesn’t negotiate in base salary. You could ask for more RSUs and Sign on bonus.
Fantastic username
What’s a reasonable sign on bonus to ask for?
If you don't accept, there will be plenty of others. Rmemeber that Workday gives annual refreshers unlike many other tech companies.
Yeah they made that subtly clear to me when they said I was their first choice and they’d be reaching out to their second choice if I declined. The annual refreshers stood out to me too, big sticking point
I’ve hired multiple P3 in the last year. None of them got that much base or stock tho my group not software engineering.
What is your group?
Be prepared to walk. The negotiations will depend on the Org and the director. Some orgs will have room for negotiations and some will not. Your offer is in line with your YOE. I am a P3 SDE in ATL and my base is around 160k but i have almost 10 YOE. Joined last year and had to negotiate. I had a competing FAANG offer. The ATL band for P3 base salary is 130-173k. I confirmed this with HR. Initial target for the stock grant was 140k but it has recently been reduced for locations outside of pleasanton so 130k makes sense
P.S, now is a great time to join WDAY as you will be getting your initial grant at a great price.
Thank you for this, super helpful. Is it wise to ask for a base near top of band in the hopes they will meet somewhere in the middle? Don't want them to flat out refuse or worst case rescind the offer if I asked for something like $170k

How strict is the google RTO ?
Almost all companies are lowballing because of the flood of SWEs in the market. It’s all about supply and demand. Do you have other offers? If not it looks like your workday offer is 2x your current compensation. I don’t see any reason not to take it
I’m currently interviewing with Nike that so far is promising. A few other companies in the final stages that are small to midsize companies. Dunno if any will turn around an offer in enough time.
I very much doubt Nike would give you a comparable TC offer to Workday.
