Asking for my bro He has received an offer from Workday as a Software Development Engineer. The work would include working on Xpresso for some time and Java on other time. I have serious concerns about learning the proprietary language Xpresso. - How hard is the learning curve? - Is it a language or form like Wordpress or what? - Is that skill transferable to new employer? As in how hard it is to find a new Job after working on Xpresso? As it is not a language and is only used by Workday TC: 135k / 90K RSU #workday #xpresso #career #offer #tech
Careful when they say you can “dip your toes in Java”. I didn’t know that many roles that used both. Most did one or the other. Many eng after a couple years either transferred to Tools or left.
IMHO working in an App Dev role at workday for more than a year is doing your career as a software developer significant damage. Not only is it proprietary and mostly un-transferable, but it is also highly opinionated. It is a patchwork of object oriented philosophies, concepts etc sloppily patched together over the years. The development environment and tools are slow, buggy and frustrating to deal with. You will find a lot of app developers looking to move to tools or other teams that don’t use Xpresso. Even within workday, many software developers/teams that dont do Xpresso development look down on and doubt the experience of Xpresso devs. There is also an effort for teams to build applications in regular languages outside of the Xpresso world because people have started to notice how limiting Xpresso is. That offer isn’t even that good, unless ur bro has no other option, then he can go for this
Thanks for detailed explanation
It’s if app dev don’t do it . Try to get another offer
App dev is not a dev. - sad app dev :(
Do not join
Just be clear about how much work will be on xPresso and how much will be java. Pure xo even for 6 months can cause damage to your progress. The company and the work is good.
Stay tf away
Are you planning to leave?
Yes, but for different reasons. If you're joining as a non XO dev, it's not too bad and the WLB / culture is amazing. But I would stay far far away from XO land
What level? Is that Associate or career level? P2/P3? Also it’s a good job and I know plenty who exit very well.
XpressO is basically an object-oriented wrapper for SQL combined with a page builder. The learning curve is tough - the first month or two will be spent in XpressO Bootcamp to learn it. As long as you’re still dipping your toes in Java you should be fine, as far as transferable skills go.
A lot of people jump ships after! I think it’s okay and you also develop strong object oriented design skills
By jump ship, can you jump to a different team within Workday? Does Workday provide good internal mobility?
