Working at AWS

Hey, Need some help/advice here. I only heard bad things about working @Amazon on this app specifically that now I’m at the point where I’m ditching the AWS recruiters. This would have never happened before. I need honest feedback from people who work there as engineers, how is your daily jobs like? How is the culture, team, managers, etc. I’m asking on average as I realize we all have ups and downs. Thanks in advance! TC $150k Exp. 3 years

I like it. It really depends, and there is a lot of variation across teams. Obviously it’s a tough environment and not suited for everyone. Try it out if you are ready to grind and create your workstream independently.

Don't listen to people here. At 3 years experience just look to work hard and learn as much as possible and Amazon is a good for that. You can switch to more comfortable wlb type companies later on

I’ve worked at AWS and I left for another team in Amazon. It’s honestly product and team and people dependent. AWS like Amazon is a massive org - a company within a company and each product is like its own company. I’ve known people who have been in AWS S3 who have hated the ops load (as all Amazon SDEs have to do oncall rotations). I’ve also met people who are having a good work life balance within the same org. I was in AWS and it was non stop work and a fear of PIP culture and a manager who would email me at 8pm at night to complain about some code review I did or didn’t do. I’m now in another Amazon org (non AWS) and I think I worked there less in a year than I did in AWS for 3 months and still got a great rating. So it’s all iffy. Some recommendations: - Stay away from name orgs like S3 or DynamoDB. They have huge ops load - Try to make friends/know people so you can switch if you don’t like it in your team - Don’t trust people who are in Amazon for 6+ years especially managers. After a while, PIP and recycling employees becomes second nature. My best experiences were with people who came from outside the company as they held enthusiasm and interpreted the leadership principles as they were intended, not as a weapon to discipline employees.

You can see the soul missing from aws employees that have worked there for more than 3 years because they've seen it all. New hires come in with optimism and a go getter attitude but eventually everyone gets broken down to a cog so they either quit or mindlessly grind away and lose their soul too. People that join orgs like S3 are crazy. I don't know of any internal transfers that would willingly go there. Who would have thought the world's largest cloud storage service has ops hell.

Not an engineer but it's great! A couple of bad apples here and there but otherwise a really good place to work.

My team works hard but it’s not that bad. Not much to complain about but I’m SDE 1 so

Think of Blind like Glassdoor , majority of people come here to vent and hear gossip , so going to skew negative 3+ years and enjoy AWS. There are some crap days and crap process , but happens everywhere
