What are the worst places you could be a designer? My top 5: - Meta — Most designers and leaders here are talentless robots. Design is more performative than influential. - Any bank — Almost everyone I know working in fintech or banking is miserable. Ethics are constantly challenged and/or ignored. - Walmart — If you like having a new boss every week while roadmaps shift hourly… Walmart is for you. - Netflix — Same as Meta - eBay — The company is dying and everyone knows it. Everyone you work with is coasting until they retire.
I feel like these lists aren’t very helpful if you don’t give reasons.
Good call! Sorry about that. I’ll add more color.
Wtf?! If you get them on your resume, you’re sorted for life. Do you realise how many brands aspire to those companies. You’re living in a bubble. You could do consulting or become a NED after a good few years at each of those brands.
Not true. Companies like Meta and Amazon are becoming resume poison. At least Amazon pays well.
Meta pays better than Amazon…
- The Home Depot
Worst in which way? What is your criteria?
Yeah, is eBay really so bad? Sure it's a little bit of a zombie now but people still use it.
AWS. Unique combination of high pressure while also deeply boring.
Hahaha you sum it up so succinctly
I think you’re conflating design culture with business ethics re. Meta.
Both are awful at Meta
Nah there’s some solid designers there, so assuming the design culture isn’t that bad
It’s honestly pretty bad everywhere.
Feels like these are all the companies that rejected OP
Feels like you make a lot of assumptions. 👀
Lol don't worry. I'm also of the opinion that FAANG and all the prestigious companies are overrated. I was just having fun. I prefer smaller startups that do meaningful work
OP curious what your top 6-10 worst would be and why, if you’re game
I aim to only judge based on places I’ve worked or have experience with. A few that also come to mind: 6. Amazon - This is a cult, not a business. You be asked to do awful things including throwing your peers under the bus. 7. Meta - Because it deserves to be on the list twice. 8. Coinbase - I interviewed there and one of the interviewers said he was quitting that day and “didn’t give a crap”…then ended the call. 9. SalesForce - Similar to Coinbase, but it was the hiring manager saying what an awful place it was. 10. Twitter - I applied and got an auto-rejection at 11pm saying “my visual design skills needed work” in a canned message. I didn’t send a work sample. 🤷♂️
Amazing story from Coinbase
Sure. TC & YOE Or GTFO!!!
