Worth it to Move to San Francisco for Meta Data Science Role?

Hi all, Just want to get some outside perspective on this. Just spoke to a recruiter about interviewing for a data scientist role at Meta. How is data science at meta? How is life in San Frnacisco? Currently a data scientist at a bank in NYC, so it would be a quite a big shift. I know TC would be better, but want to get a sense of other aspects of the shift (i.e quality of life) TC:160k YOE:4

It’ll boost your career so I’d do it. Wlb and COL are going to be horrid

UBS JJNd72 OP Mar 20

The wlb and col is exactly what I'm worried about lol

Worth it for now to bite the bullet. You’re not getting paid enough

I would say absolute yes for you. 4+ years at a company like META will change your career and financial trajectory. I personally wouldn’t do it now because I have 15 yoe.

I would do it. I did exactly this at 10 YOE (not data science but another technical function). It boosted my career and comp and I won’t look back. Solid tour of duty at Meta in a technical role opens a lot of doors.

If you live in nyc the col is no different and maybe less. Now if it’s quality of life that depends on what you like. Sf and nyc are extremely different. I lived in both and wouldn’t return to sf again. For wlb t depends on how good you are and what you need to learn to get up to speed. Yes you might have to work harder but you’re getting paid more and it’s an upward career trajectory. It’s meta and not a carnival cruise ship so be prepared for real work.

Hey! Congratulations on the offer! Moving to SF would be quite different from NYC. Lot less colder but definitely windy! More hip and culturally diverse. There is gentrification but most of the people here wouldn’t care or judge you. Not sure of DS at meta. But if you wouldn’t mind, what kind of a position is this? Correction : Typo - Less diverse than NYC.

Are you actually suggesting SF is more hip and culturally diverse than NYC?

Rocket Mortgage JonRocket Mar 20

Sorry. Typo. Corrected it.

Go for it if you’re looking to accelerate your career. Have you tried finding a role in NYC? Meta has a decent presence in nyc. Why move?

UBS JJNd72 OP Mar 21

Recruiter said they only have headcount available in SF, I originally applied for NY only lol

Get the job offer first. After that you can probably find someway back to NYC. Worst case you start in SF and figure it out. That’s what I did with my first job. Took about 9 months to get back home with a transfer as a new grad (this was 10 years ago)

I think its worth it for sure. Wlb depends on team but in my experience even a stressful team was <40hrs (just a different kind of stress). I like sf a lot. Prob one of the best cities in the world except for the homeless. Cheaper and more space than NYC. Nightlife is worse and not as diverse (everyone is from asia and in tech so talk about the same things). Other than that landscape and architecture are beautiful (imo). Lots of people are always out running, exercising etc so its motivating in a sense. Weather is better in the winters

How much is your offer? And what level?

Premature question, secure an offer first.

UBS JJNd72 OP Mar 21

Fair

WLB is bad but the TC changed my life so it’s a reasonable trade
