Do you use a luxury car as a daily?
Empty nester going back to school for a PhD in CS, I have 20 yoe in the industry but now want to shift a bit from development to AI/ML research. I think PhD interns at FAANG makes just about the same as I do now (US65/hour). TC: US65/hour, I am Canadian living in BC. #software #intern #ai
I am interested to know what the answer to this is, are you in ubc phd ?
sfu
that might play a bigger role, google is pretty elitist when selecting phd interns, especially in ai/ml. Unless you know someone else from your lab at Sfu that has pulled it off. Precedence also helps.
I know some older people who went back for a master's in their late 30s and became an intern after being full time at Google. Might be kinda weird, but realistically it comes down to whether or not your interviewers are ageist pieces of sht.
Damn! 30 is old now?
For an intern, of course
No
Yep as long as you can clear interview and don’t spread out your age wisdom to others
Step 1 is getting the interview Some recruiters might be ageist
Agreed, but hopefully op can get referrals. Recruiter are incentivized to close a position. They may ignore op thinking he will not pass the interview. That’s the barrier op has to overcome.
They’d probably let you intern but I really hope you don’t go for an L4 job afterwards with 20YOE and a PhD
He probably cares a lot less about the title and more about fulfillment (which believe it or not doesn’t come with titles)
Lots of words and not a single mention of prestige
You can find a full-time position at FAANG without doing an internship. Leverage on your working experience and transferable skills. Good luck!
ML research positions require prior internships and graduate experience.
I think it’s admirable what you are doing. You should give it a try. Why not? People like you will make way for changing the minds of younger generations. Ageism needs to be broken.
Also a few heads.
Agreed 💯
I thought there was literally a whole movie about that
Yeah, and it outlined pretty much what everyone in tech thinks about people over the age of 30. No one wanted to work with them, no one wanted to be near them.
film name?
Most software engineers retire by 40 after making boat load of money
Uh absolutely not true
I personally know 4-5 who did, maybe I should caveat by saying FAANG swes retire early or can retire if they wanted to
Maybe
