Considering all the leaks about vile and immoral things happening at Facebook, would you accept and offer from Facebook ? - Facebook has been allowing anti Muslim hate content to spread throughout India - Facebook ignored internal complaints about the spread of posts with political misinformation leading up to the 2020 election -Facebook didn't do enough to time down stop the steel groups ahead of the insurrection -Facebook watched as Qanon conspiracy theories mushroomed - Facebook routinely makes exception for powerful actors when enforcing content policy -Mark Zuckerberg bowed to Vietnam's censorship demands - document show Facebook didn't do much to stop the spread of violent rhetoric around the Ethiopian civil war - Apple almost booted Facebook and Instagram from the app store because it wasn't doing enough to stop human trafficking in Middle East -Facebook allowed Arabic hate content to spread across its platform a lot -Iraqi militia have been posting child nudity on rivals Facebook pages
You have to feed your family at the end of the day. Every company is accused of being immoral. Amazon is accused of abc, salesforce is accused of xyz, google is accused of xyz..
I have declined every interview that I’ve been offered over the years, and I repeatedly tell them that I don’t have a Facebook account and I disagree with their value system
Why do you work at Microsoft if the ethics of a company concerns you?
There was an excellent post above that I’d respond to - if my family depended on it, yes I would accept it. That said, I’ve been fortunate enough to be in a position to decline. Also, yes - a lot of companies have done messed up stuff, including Microsoft and my new company Salesforce. That said, Amazon and Facebook are especially egregious.
Facebook is fine. All this drama is going to blow over.
Declined a few months ago, only used their offer to improve the offer from MS. That said, if they gave me a nuclear offer (>180%) it would be a difficult decision.
How many levels did they uplevel you at MSFT to even begin to compare to FB?

You do realize in your post you are complaining about censorship (in vietnam) and non censorship in other countries... you cant have it both ways... For all the FB allowed bla bla bla, do we think of fb as the globes police? For all the ignored internal complains: Do you realize how fucking big fb is and allows discussion from everyone? Like literally the bus driver could be posting that "we didnt do enough on the insurrection". That doesnt indicate there s any data behind the thought. Ive been around the bay enough to know this will just blow over, but am surprised that anyone workong in tech who s supposedly an ace in rationale would take this seriously.
All of these are because no system that works at such a massive scale as Facebook will be perfect. Not because of some intentional work by FB. I bet the journalists that you are reading have no background in computer science or worked at scale. Ironically I think the media is more responsible for polarization in the US than anything else. Just watch MSNBC and Fox News for 30 minutes each and you’d think both sides of the political spectrum are just evil
FB is the biggest in this area and they will keep attacking. If twitter, snap or tiktok are bigger, they wouldn’t care about FB. Why are the media attacking FB? who owns them?
The sad thing is that the media will lose revenue regardless of what they do. They think attacking FB will bring us down(it won’t) and keep the revenues in Rupert Murdoch’s pockets, but even assuming for a second they do,it will be replaced by another social media company which will also take away their ad revenues, purely because advertising in the media is very inefficient. It’s better and more efficient for small scale businesses to grow and compete with the Walmart’s by advertising on social media If they really want to do something, they should re-evaluate their business model and work on adapting or they will continue the decline and focus their energies in the wrong place while they do
So we are supposed to be mad at FB, a company of only 50K employees for not saving the world? The U.S. government that spends trillions on "Intelligence" couldn't even predict Jan 6th or the Ethiopian war. Hindsight can make anyone feel like a prophet.
I declined an interview loop with them. I've heard too many horror stories about Facebook being the new Amazon and wanted no parts. I ended up with an offer from LinkedIn instead and could not be happier.

Pip culture, hardly any wlb, political culture in terms of promotion etc. Not to mention the social ramifications of fb. Nothing against anyone that works there, I just refuse to. Same applies to amazon.
pretty much every tech company has some fucked up shit about them facebook just pisses media off more so media makes a bigger deal about facebook. facebook has taken a lot of business away from media outlets and people eat up whatever media tells them to be mad at for the day
