A headhunter contacted me about a role that I’m very interested in and have the experience to fill. We spoke on the phone and they asked if I’d send them a resume that they can pass on etc. They then sent me a link to the hiring manager’s LinkedIn…I have no connection to the hiring company or the person in charge there. Is it uncool to just email the hiring manager direct and say a headhunter mentioned you’re hiring for xyz, let’s talk?
Nothing happens. The recruiting firm will get paid if you get hired, the contracts are basically - we show you people in exchange for you paying us a few if any of the people we show you get hired over the next 1-2 years. Reach around!!! Maybe you'll get on a recruiters shit list, but they either 1) weren't selling you properly or 2) you're good enough that they'll recruit you again anyway. There is the off chance they were saving you for something better, but that is highly unlikely. You are actually giving them more bites at the fee apple by approaching yourself.
Not a good practice… The recruiter will find out directly from the hiring manager that you went around them. Can miss out on future opportunities as well
Ask them to connect you with the hiring manager. Sending you a link is not sufficient if they are to get 10-20% of your pay in commission.
Don't do that. If the headhunter brought the opportunity to you treat him or her with respect. Also, if you are looking for a change and this time it doesn't work out it's another resource you have. Don't waste it.
You have nothing to gain and a lot to lose by going direct. 1. The company has paid the Recruiter to find you and manage the process. 2. You risk being rejected completely for being unethical. 3. You'd lose out on representation throughout the process, key insight and someone overcoming concerns on your behalf. 4. The Recruiter has sent you the details so you can do your due diligence (good process), not betray their trust for some misconceived idea that you're better off without them. Send the Recruiter your resume to make the intro professionally. It may sound like a good idea to go direct if you believe the hiring manager would unethically cut a service provider out of a fee, but would you want to work for that kind of manager? The Recruiter will get the fee anyway and the hiring manager will end up resenting the hire.

I don’t think it’s uncool. But headhunters have some sort of contract with the company where reaching out directly to the manager will drop you from their list. Also, if 2 headhunters reach a job post with your resume, neither of them can present you to the client - basically you’re on the losing end. This is all I’ve heard from my friends at some big recruitment firms.
