House prices are higher for a reason. You will enjoy the house more in bay area with bigger social circle because of a big house and also you will have more appreciation and also schools will be better and more competitive with a shot for your kid to make it to Berkeley and stanford and you will enjoy better weather and will have beaches mountains snow deserts all close by. Period. Now if you buy half house price in austin, you will need atleast 2 of those to be consider actually big shot and to have bigger social circle just because of house. So less money you have to buy a house you will get less in life. No hack like moving to cheaper area will give you that satisfaction that richer people will have. I can give you analogy. You are trying to not go to iit or top college because you know you cannot be topper there. But remember being a mediocre in iit trying to get to top is more fulfilling than being a topper in low grade college. Same goes for bay area vs low col for housing. Another thing is you can retire anywhere you want if you are able to get house in bay area bit if you get house in cheaper place sorry you cant retire in bay area.
