Would you move from Austin TX to Sacramento CA?

I’m considering a move to Sacramento area, currently in Austin TX. Both cities have similarities. There are maybe a bit more jobs opportunities in Austin but the Bay Area is the backup plan for that. Would you make the move? Can’t handle the rain, traffic, wind and humidity in Austin. Prices are the same, houses, food, etc. Businesses are banking on the fact that everyone is moving here. It became expensive. There’s nothing to visit around Austin either unlike Sac where you can go to Lake Tahoe every weekend, the Bay, etc. Any red flags I should think of besides high taxes and 90-100 degree weather in summer? No to California.

Looks like you don’t like Austin so you have to move out. Be careful with Sacramento though: no tech scene and big CA taxes. Have you considered other options ? What is your objective function ?

I like Austin a lot but it’s changing too rapidly. Unless you’re into real estate investment it doesn’t make sense anymore to move here. Tech workers go to the office, drop their kids at school, hit the park on the weekend, mow their lawn and that’s about it. You can’t escape the weather and the crowd near the lake so most of the people stay inside. Feels like California has a lot more to offer in terms of scenery and things to do.

Sac is a small city that is spread across. The few tech companies there are in the suburbs. It is not a bad place to be, you just want to avoid the bad neighborhoods where petty crime may be more prevalent. As for weather, expect rain and cold in the winter and the summer is hot and dry. Try to live close to your work as traffic is also bad.

Sacramento is a lot more affordable than the Bay area, but the city itself is pretty boring. It's not crazy far from both SF Bay Area and Tahoe, but not particularly close either. That said, some people really like it, particularly if you want something a little more quiet. The proximity to Tahoe is nice if you like nature. Just don't expect a lively atmosphere like Austin. Not to say there's not restaurants and bars, it's just not that kinda place.

If you drive an hour away from Austin (in any direction) you’ll find yourself in the middle of nowhere. Flat and nothing around but farm land. That’s my main concern, I need mountains, diversity and choices. The food is overrated in texas unless you love smoked meat and tacos. California has more variety and prices are the same anyway...

From Sacramento, I drove to Lake Tahoe every single weekend that the slopes were open and made it up before everybody else from the Bay.

California taxes. Also California’s government is poorly run.

Yes. If you aren’t in the Bay Area it’s not worth it. At least TX has less taxes

I am a fan of Austin but if I am being real op is right. The things to do list is pretty short, outdoors is pretty meh, no real sports team(I like that tho) Traffic isn’t really fun either.

It is bad, not as bad as the Bay or Seattle for sure, but it’ll get there soon. If you want to buy a small house (3-4bd) brand new, it’s 400k minimum near good schools. The quality of the homes is pretty mediocre now since builders try to make as much money as they can milking the cow. New houses are smaller, more expensive and of cheaper quality. People who move here come from very expensive places, so the gap between a 800k townhouse in the Bay for instance and your 400k small house in Austin is getting smaller and smaller by the day. I’d still be happy to move to austin and spend $500k versus $750k for the same house. People don’t think twice. Also, the resale market is dead in Austin unlike California where new constructions are not necessarily the main criteria for people. They look for location first. In austin location is key but people would rather buy the same house next door because it’s brand new. So when you buy here you should consider renting your property in the future versus building equity in your house. Average time on the market can reach a year easily unless you drop you price buy a lot to make it attractive.
