My wife and i combined TC is only 300K maybe 450K depending on new offer. Working either soho or near ktown. We dont really club or party, but love eating out and watching musicals. Looking to spend like ~3k a month give or take 500$. #housing #housing #Newyork
Lol im conforming to blind culture yo
Upper east side, long island city, williamsburg, etc. you should explore every parts of area and discover the scenes yourself
Thanks ive been eyeing long island city for sure. Its not a comfortable drive since im in norther virginia to look at places with covid but not the worst. Heard someone say you should decide neighborhood by lifestyle not by commute
I always value commute more than the lifestyle, but you shouldnt be following what others are doing. Create your own set of criteria and narrow down the list. NYC is HUGE. Also no one drives in the city. You take the mta
Op, I would highly recommend TriBeCa or Battery Park area. They can be quite pricy, but the area is pretty nice. You would have a plenty of upscaled dining and shopping opportunities as well as a ton of parks.
If you’re moving to experience Manhattan, live there first. Being able to walk everywhere is the best and what makes it so unique in the first place. UES is good value with a good vibe and restaurants and there’s now a Q train straight to Times Square for musicals. Otherwise East Village is great and where I prefer to live. You’ll get more for your money in Astoria or Jersey City but you lose the city vibe. Carroll Gardens area in Brooklyn is fantastic if you like charm and brownstones. Avoid midtown. FiDi can be reasonably priced but it’s pretty dead so you’ll have to commute to enjoy the city vibe. Prices are down right now, so easy to get a good deal.
Why avoid midtown? I'm looking to move to NYV and was looking to move to the midtown area..
Because it’s a business district with mostly office buildings that is a ghost town in the evenings and now during Covid all day. There’s no charm and not much to do. Hells Kitchen is the only area I would consider but it is also near Times Square, so lots of tourists and shady characters if you’re near Port Authority bus station. If you’re moving for a fun lively atmosphere with restaurants, bars and unique shops as you’ve seen on tv, midtown is not where you’ll find it.
Astoria NY
I love living in East Village. Amazing food, pretty streets with brick walk ups, and a fairly residential feel for Manhattan. I can and do walk to LES for even more good food or SoHo to laze around on a Sunday or WSP to have coffee and just watch the scene. If you're moving to NYC for the first time and want to get that ~feeling~, I'll echo what some others said that you should start with Manhattan. Can't really go wrong with lower Manhattan especially. Also, rent is extremely cheap right now due to covid so negotiate wherever you look. I signed pre covid and my landlord offered 1/3 off rent for a renewal. Many places are giving 3 months off on a year.
Whatever you do, don't let anyone convince you that living in Jersey City or Hoboken is "pretty much the same" as living in the city because it's not.
Do you work at Microsoft in NYC?
long island city, yorkville section of upper east side, jersey city and hoboken.
+1 for Yorkville super underrated, cheap rent by manhattan standards and gets better every year with new bars/restaurants
I don’t think it’s underrated. Most people just lump it into UES
If you work in midtown, then Long Island City so you can take the 7 train. If you work in downtown then I recommend Jersey City
Lifelong new yorker here. Upper west side, tribeca, gramercy
"only 300k" lmao Ppl gotta get some perspective sheesh. It's a lot of money Tc: 370k
300k combined TC is two junior engineers or one senior or middle engineer at a bigger company. What are you talking about? That might be higher than most of America, but there is still a lot of room to grow (and most importantly not enough room to splurge)
Its a combined tc, $300k in NYC isnt a comfortable salary for a couple, especially if they have any kid. Combined $400k is on the comfortable side
