I'll go first: https://www.businessinsider.com/google-salaries-levels-locations-races-gender-leaked-data-2023-9?utm_medium=newsletter&utm_source=Sailthru&utm_campaign=Insider_Today TC $500k
Not surprising unfortunately. That’s terrible. Black and brown software engineers are getting significantly less equity. Would like to also see median salaries and equity as well. Average can be skewed by a few.
It doesn’t specify they’re all software engineers though
Correlation causation
Eh… 100 times better than what you get back home, I’ll take a $50K paycut even, just to stay in the states
insanely Low IQ justification lmao
Not true. And this is comparing software engineers to other software engineers.
Lol, muh education. You do realize in that table highest tc is neither Asian nor middle eastern
What the fuck. This absolutely means nothing without more information. What are the metrics of the average experience of different ethnicities? Maybe African Americans started getting into tech only more recently and are less experienced? There are ton of other factors to consider.
The reality is that it’s probably a mix of everything, black/African descent SWEs more likely to be less experienced, but also, they’re likely being low balled as well. I’m sure the HR folks and hiring managers are more likely to subconsciously think the black dude should just be happy they’re at Google in the first place.
How does this imply racism?
Correlation something something causation...
It’s funny how with centuries of racism you can’t possibly fathom that our institutions are racist. If you keep seeing the same correlation everywhere you can start to imply causation.
Since they are taking medians and Google has very tight in band comp structures, this data is more likely saying Blacks are in median at a lower IC level than Asians and Whites, as opposed to Blacks within their band being paid less than counterparts. I.e., median Asian is L4, median Black is L3. Now, why the median level of Blacks and Hispanics is lower, is most likely due to overall low representation in tech, which could have very complicated explanations, including possibly institutional racism, culture, immigration history, global talent pools, etc. As an example, most H1B tech workers are Asian, not Black (e.g., from Africa). That certainly heavily skews the data. Can we blame low H1B visas from African countries on American institutional racism?
Am I the only one who failed to see anything racist in the data ?
Hard to see anything when one closes their eyes
Yea because paying black people significantly less must be something you don’t bat an eye on
Maybe some races are more prone, maybe culturally, to accept the first low ball offer they get?
And what are the drivers behind those decisions MSFT? For example, in South Africa the first black kids integrated into a mixed and equal education system was in 1994. Their parents would have been legally and forcefully subjected to apartheid education for blacks, Indians and coloureds. Meaning they would not have context for negotiating power. Meta hires (NOW) a reasonable amount of black South Africans into their Dublin office in business functions, but not as much as Nigerians who by sheer population density (like Indian and China) represent their continent across a broader pool of talent. Surely there has to be some critical thought behind these blasé responses fellow 1%? Or is MSFT talent a 5-10%, potentially limiting your range in thought?
As a middle eastern SDE can confirm we are #1. Sorry to the Indians and Asians TC 400
hala 7abibi!
Muslim Indian here, sorry you aren't.
