Hey guys, title says it all. I'm at the 1-year mark with Capital One's APM program and am less than impressed. Had a friend jump ship a few months ago and I finally want to do the same. Here is why I am considering leaving: - I now know who my new team is (rotational program) and I'm not thrilled to work in that space for 1 more year. - I was stunted a promotion this month after being told routinely since January I would get one due to taking on an extra engineering team, pulling weeks of long hours, and taking over my manager's work after he left. - The program promised learning opportunities and mentorship and has offered neither, was essentially dropped on a team and told to figure it out. Noting that other PMs in my organization were so stretched thin they couldn't offer advice. - I moved out to their Richmond VA office after being told we were 100% going back in person 2 weeks into my role and its 1 year later and I've been remote since day 1. Being remote is fine with me, but uprooting my life to a new city with no good reason, no connections, and slim exposure to other opportunities is not fine. - I feel as if my earning potential is being stifled, as I receive a base salary of 88k. Here is my concern: - I want to be strategic with my next move to maximize my learning and earning potential. If that means staying one more year to land a better job later, I would do that. I am aiming to spend several years in PM and relocate back to the Bay Area. - I am uncertain how competitive a 1 year APM experience lends itself for PM roles. I applied to a few roles in May and didn't even scrape past the resume review. - Imposter syndrome Here's some notes on my background: - Class of 2021, undergrad - Innovation analyst for 1 year - Entrepreneur in residence at energy firm, built climate tech product - Innovation board at Kakao in Seoul - Data consultant for City of Buenos Aires - Program adviser role at summer incubator across US Seeking roles that are either back in SF, DC, or remote/hybrid. Any advice? Do I have a shot? If so, where should I aim? I was in the final round for APM programs at Meta, Twitter, and Uber but didn't land those offers. #productmanager #apm #product #jobsearch
1 yoe is a little too early for pm roles, a little too late for APM
You can try and interview although may be harder but for sure not impossible. Just make sure to prep really well first. Apply to whatever interests you and is open tbh in current market.
Selling yourself short. You have potential and you have time on your side. Capital one is not a product-led company. You will get a good offer. Ask yourself, why did you not land the faang apm offers? Work on those weakness.
Doesn't hurt to try. Was in similar shoes to you. Only advice I'd give myself going back would be to think about what I'd like to do medium term, but have some patience in getting there. If you want to stay in product, your exit ops will be much better with 2 yoe and really great with 3 yoe. But you never know, doesn't hurt to see what you can get now.
