Hi, I’m graduating with a phd focused on ML (5-6 neurips,icml,... papers) from a top-5. I did two research internships at Google with outstanding reviews from my hosts as they said (google brain and then another research team) and published two papers as a result (google AI blogposts and everything). Still, I got desk rejected for the data scientist role after applying through referral link. What did I do wrong? I also got desk rejected for the RS role and replied back to the recruiter’s email with wtf is going kn and then he replied that oh your resume is outstanding bluh bluh and put me back in the process. What is going on? #google
What's going on is there are thousands of candidates as qualified as you're, you're not unique, get over it.
There aren't thousands of people with Google Brain internships. Yes this is an extremely competitive position, but in spite of that, OP is actually really qualified here.
There are people with other qualifications that OP doesn't have. It's never a 1 to 1 match, bottom line is, many ppl are over qualified
There are not thousands of candidates like you. Reach out to the people you know in Google and ask around. You def deserve interviews at least.
Get in touch with your internship hosts/ managers and ask them to refer you
Doesn’t matter what you think. There’s always someone better. Move on
If you don't think guy deserves an interview then you don't know what you are talking about and are probably just mean
You're probably over qualified for the DS role. The DS role is just using SQL/Python on data and discussing your findings with PMs from what I understand.

What is “desk rejected”? How many of the 4-5 papers are first authored?
Desk reject: Rejected without interview “Your resume was rejected on the screener’s desk”
Rejected right after applying. All of them are first authored
They may have had someone already in mind or someone just like you with s higher gpa, more interesting research, more publications, better reviews.
Lol, Netflix and LinkedIn keep autorejecting me and I have two degrees from top-5 institutions, dozens of publications in ML and NLP, have built multi-hundred million dollar businesses and run a large, high impact group at Amazon. Also, Facebook and Google both refuse to interview me at the correct level and keep trying to downscope me and then give up when I tell them how much I make and ask them if they can beat it. So yeah, right now the market is flooded, valuations are skyhigh and it's a shitshow. The thing to do is hunker down, play it cool, work connections and don't look desperate. Don't bother applying online until you already have an in.
Whew so Netflix isn’t just auto rejecting me.
@Amazon—did one of your startups get acquired by AMZN? Or what made you exit to go work there in particular?
Just say Berkeley
I didn’t understand a single word.
Errm how come you didn’t get a return offer?
I did the internships early on in the PhD so there was no return possible
There were, you could have dropped your phd, now you're competing against everyone else, much tougher
What are you doing in Salesforce? Intern?
