Hi, I currently work as a pretty standard PM (product for external customers), and I've been considering applying for the following job, because the field is super interesting to me and the pay would be better. The thing is: the title is "(Senior) Application PM", and I was wondering if this is actually a proper PM job and if taking it would be a bad career move...this is the job description: As a Senior Application Product Manager, you report to the Head of Products for Sustainability and play a pivotal role in driving the development and management of our sustainability products. You will leverage your expertise to understand market dynamics, customer needs, and industry trends to shape and build products that enable businesses to balance sustainability goals with their economic goals, especially in the supply chain. Drive the end-to-end product lifecycle for sustainability applications, from concept to launch and beyond. 2. Conduct thorough market research, analyze data, and gather insights to inform product strategy and development. 3. Architect and develop cutting-edge sustainability solutions that support companies to achieve their sustainability goals. One of your core activities is to build a product including all related technical tasks, using our platform 4. Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, product managers, and engineers to align product development with business objectives. 5. Lead customer co-innovation initiatives, engage the sustainability customer community and drive user involvement in product evolution. 6. Yes, my current PM role is an Application PM role. My company splits some of the customer facing job responsibilities with another role called Commercial PM. This is probably specific to my company but I have started to see Application Product Manager roles come up more as of recently.
Thanks! So would this be a step back in my career (my current role has all responsibilities)? And could I still call myself a „Product Manager“ (on LinkedIn etc)?
From looking at the JD you posted. From my perspective it’s a real PM position, maybe just slightly more technical but not enough to be a full Technical PM. I would say it’s a step back from just reading the JD, but maybe through the interview process you can feel it out of it would be a step back in responsibility. Good luck!
