I'm an immigrant currently working for an NYC employer and living in Jersey City, NJ in a shared apartment. I will be getting married next year and was wondering if it is feasible to live in Jersey City. My soon-to-be wife wouldn't be working for at least 2 years (due to visa restrictions). Any insights on how much would be the living expenses for a couple living in a 2-bed apartment would be appreciated. I'm also considering moving to south Jersey like Edison, New Brunswick, etc if Jersey city is not feasible. PS: My employer is remote-friendly, so I'm open to relocating to different states like Texas, North Carolina, etc. My current TC is $110k. #housing #nj #newjersy #expenses #remotework #relocation
You'll be fine. Just won't be able to save too much. Texas may be okay but rents are not necessarily cheaper unless you're okay with locations outside the popular ones (Frisco, McKinney, Anna, Melissa etc) I live in one of the areas you mention (NJ). Feel free to DM if you need more help
110k is a bit tight, but if you can find a place for ~2500, you’ll be fine. I was in a similar position and we made do in NYC with 115k salary and 2600 in rent.
Agreed
Do you think relocating to a different state makes sense, considering having better lifestyle?
Delaware has no sales tax, that could help. Plus it’s on the Eastcoast so you’ll be in the same time zone You can get a 1bd room for 1500?
Do you mean state tax? As far as I know, Delaware has state tax on salary
No sales tax, when you buy a car no sales tax!!!!
OP, How much is your current rent ?
My current rent for a shared apartment is $1300 + utilities
Look for places near The Heights. Affordable rents in townhouses of 2b2b(~2300)
