I created this post to help people thinking about joining one of those companies Google The best of all three. Very organized, they have a best in class process for everything and you will have the best support you need for any project you are working. Pros - Very organized - Very talented co-workers - Best products and services - Every project is treated like they are building a Ferrari - Amazing campus - The best restaurants and food of all 3 - As long as you do a great job they will give you access to the best perks in town - (In my experience) my managers were very polite and respectful. I never had any conflict with anyone in 4 years in the company Cons - Really hard to be promoted (actually promoted, not IC level promotions). There are 1 promotion available to 50 other very hunger people that do the same thing as you. - It doesn’t matter if you are right, they will always side with the highest paid person in the room. - HR doesn’t exist to help you, they exist to help the company Meta It’s a nice place to work but full of problems. Meta is like a very promising band that made a great album 10 years ago and all their new hits are from other bands. Like a band, it’s full of conflicts and mountain size egos. Pros - You have a good opportunities to work individually or in small groups and create something awesome - the best place to learn and grow . You are challenged to be constantly growing and improving. - nice campus - very good food and perks - they treat you well. No complains about salary, hours and perks - if you want you can bring a person everyday to have lunch with you . Cons - Sometimes it feels like a cult that they force you to take part of. - extremely political. If you do well at Meta you can work in a political party in Washington - People’s promotion is much more based on influence than on performance. There are people on my team working more than 10 years in the same role. - Like Google, the highest paid person in the room is always right - Lots of gossip. I don’t know that if the fact that Meta owns some of the major social media platforms play a role on that but I’ve never seen so much gossip in my life. - I see many competent people made redundant and many stupid people staying during the recent round of layoffs. It tells a lot about how politics is important at Meta TikTok At the beginning I was really concerned about working for a Chinese company and I was afraid of having to do a 996 however they are making a huge effort to try to look like a cool Silicon Valley company. However it doesn’t spare them of some major problems Pros - Still feels like a startup, so if you like to work in something that has been built from the ground up it’s a good opportunity - Great salary if you are coming from a FANG - The app is growing fast - If you do a great job you are promoted quickly because as they are growing fast they are always expanding their teams. Cons - Lots of Facebook rejects: If in one hand you have some talented people who were fed up with Google and Meta and decided to accept some great offer from TIkTok. In the other hand you also have a lot of Facebook’s reject there. People who were doing a $h1t job at Meta, were kicked out and got an opportunity at TIkTok - The worst in terms of talent. While at Google most of People are excepcional, at Meta you have some exceptional people and a lot of good ones, TikTok looks like they hired a lot of people from the $1 dollar store. It’s really exhausting sometimes to work with people so bad in what they do. If you have to work a lot with stakeholders it can be a major headache. - The less talent people are the more they think they know a lot about everything - Terrible food and average perks - Very disorganized. - They are years behind FANGs in terms of structure - The app is 1000 times more popular than Facebook or Instagram but Nobody knows if they will stay relevant or they will be blocked some day in the U.S - the higher your position the more you will work. Be prepared to do some late night VC and answer some emails at 1 AM. They will tell you to not do it but it’s inevitable Final thoughts All of 3 have strong and weak points but I can say that I don’t regret have been worked to any of them and still be working for one of them. It is a great opportunity to work for any of these 3 companies but the fact that they are popular don’t make them the only great companies in the world to work for. For example, all of them are making the employees get back to the office and after years working from home it can be a huge struggle to many people . This post is based on my personal experience and I understand that this experience can change for better or worse for other people
Hi OP, I’m currently in TikTok and it’s an utter nightmare. Just found out that they had levelled me with someone who has 2 years of experience (I have 7, 5 in PM) and the team has no structure. People don’t think in frameworks and processes…just execute and kill the project weeks apart.
“People don’t think in frameworks and processes…just execute and kill the project weeks apart.” Chinese factory mentality
“People don’t think in frameworks and processes…just execute and kill the project weeks apart.” Describes every team I’ve worked on at Meta. No project fundamentals. Just “Ready! Fire! Aim?”
excellent post, thanks for the insight. I worked at FB and this your post perfectly mirrored my experience. Google I know from close friends is similar to what you said. I was really curious about TikTok and that helps a lot.
I agree, especially the politics. Didn’t recognize it until I left, but that could also be me coming to my senses, ie the “cult” mentality is beginning to subside
Lol even uber has a cult mentality
Lol calling Google "very organized" is how I know this is fake.
Try to work for Meta and TikTok that you’ll understand
Yup I agree to G being very organised (specially compared to others). And this in itself sometimes is annoying lol
Every week here is hell.
Leave? Or are you one of those types to point out problems but offer no solutions and take no action, I ask rhetorically.
Visa, dude. Visa.
Nice post. It seems G was the best from your exp.
See you on Blind trending tomorrow
While I disagree with some of the Meta conclusions, I appreciate your perspective. Thanks for sharing!
well which ones u disagreed w/
Feel like OP's highly credible. Explicit dot points, facts, feels like genuine first hand experience working there.
Is Tiktok better or worse than Amazon? I was thinking of applying there, but most of their employees seem miserable.
Finally the most relevant Sunday’s Blind post for me.
Nah this time traveled from Tuesday. Sunday is about incel-pride and lamenting women.
What is your opinion about posting TC?
