Need guidance, may be from senior folks would be more helpful. Myself a mediocre swe and not that passionate about Tech outside work hours. I have a good pedigree - Tier 1 college and worked with a startup and another big established e-commerce startup. Dilemma : I know colleagues and seniors of mine yoe(~10), what companies they are in. But I have quite a different preference. I am really bad at doing both grinding at Job and having a family by side hence have not been targetting startups anymore (really appreciate people at this yoe who work in a fast-paced environment and also manage family alongside). I have family situations now and then and end up taking frequent leaves - I do not know how people in jobs manage such situations. What are the companies in India that people with 10+ yoe as swe IC should be targeting? I joined Indeed expecting to have some relaxation but here also they have a constant performance pressure(they have a typical performance evaluation process every 6 months which doesn't let you go slow for a few months). At this yoe you ought to be either a Senior or Staff engineer and workload/expectations increase. On another side, you also now have a family so one cannot keep on working long hours and keeping up with the latest tech outside work hours - I rarely see managers giving time to upgrade yourself within office hours. I might even plan to move to EM after some time, but then too, your life is not relaxed depending on the company/team/projects. I had thought of targetting the top companies like Adobe, Intuit, Microsoft and Salesforce where I expect to find more middle-aged people - as the culture changes if you have good young vs good count of middle-aged people. But what comes across from friends working there is it is not relaxed anywhere with the level you get in, also depends on the team you get into. Salesforce still is fine I guess. Well, you need to have luck also to get into the companies you are targetting. So trying to have a bigger set of companies. I am fine making slow progress in my career. Even ready to go for lower pay if the company offers chill wlb (problem is you might be paid less and still have loads of work pressure). I just cannot keep updating myself + working hard at my job + be interview-ready + having a family. This is just too much to handle for me. I am just looking for long-term stability, cannot keep on jumping ships. It is big pain being in Tech, even if you change a team it acts similar to changing a company. Thanks for reading through. Appreciate your thoughts if my concerns made sense to you. tc: 72 yoe: 10- #tech #career #swe #indiasalary #india #wlb #ic #seniorswe #intuit #indeed #sap #informatica #airbnb #linkedin #walmart
Oracle / IBM are the companies you are looking for. Government type orgs. IBM is so chill that some people I knew started preparing for IAS at the side (obviously to drop later on because they were too used to not work)
Look for software, devops, cloud architect roles in Intel if that matches your profile. Intel is a good company to relax and work in long term.
Na, not really. I know people at intel and their work is good 8-10 hours a day. Stretching to 12 sometimes. But never spills onto the weekends though.
Okay, May be. The teams that I’m aware of have good WLB.
Tried Salesforce?
Does Salesforce have good WLB at lower levels as well? Like AMTS/MTS, I am not fully healthy, I kind of want to work 20 hours per week for next 2-3 years. Then I can try joining Uber/Startups for my career growth. Are there any companies which can satisfy my criteria?🙃
I work 20-30 hours a week as a MTS
This is very valid question. Once your pay increases wherever you go you'll be expected to perform. If keeping up with the trends is not for you, try customer facing roles like SA, solutions engineer, they'll be some initial learning curve but once you know the product in and out you'll do fine. I'd not say there will be 100% wlb but technically it won't be very challenging after initial months you get a hang of it.
What is SA? Not aware of the job responsibilities of a Solutions engineer either.
Adobe is the answer.
Nopes, Adobe has fast paced work environment in most of the teams
Damn, IBM it is then 😂
I think you have a good pay 72L at 10 is not bad and you wouldn’t reach here without being good technically also. And those skills/experiences would be valuable at many places. Microsoft, Salesforce, Adobe, Oracle, IBM, Intuit, Bank of America and few more I’m missing are good.
Very true. Even I was thinking in the same direction.
One thing is I am always low on confidence. Another thing is it takes me time to onboard on new tech stuff. I am slow at my work + in daily life also. So it takes a higher effort from my side, which I had been doing until now. But I feel just exhausted now. And just to give myself a pat I did crack Salesforce, Indeed, Adobe over a period of last 10 months, But for the level one below from what people at my yoe gets. And I was totally fine with it, as I needed some cooldown. Problem is the team I have offer from Adobe is not chill either. And basis blind rating on wlb joined Indeed. I feel it's good in other teams its just that I have a bad luck with my manager
Go for sap. Best culture you will find
Pay is very low there, isn't it?
simply take full remote job? Take upper levels in service companies?
Do you work as staff eng at oYo ?
Posting from a friend's account. I haven't worked with oyo.
