This could be cathartic and fun. And I'll go first. I've got 15+ YOE, I've done pretty significant implementations, led large teams, report to CEO of a billion dollar company (not a flex, just context). Last year I was in a rut, and some of my YOE was becoming the same YOE in a row. I interviewed for a manager role at a big company because TC was good. Having not interviewed since the mid 2000s, I had NOOOOO idea about the interview process. I hadn't prepared specific stories, didn't have my metrics down, and had no idea I'd get asked LC questions. Now, keep in mind, this role was a downlevel for my experience but uplevel for TC. Bomb. City. It was a bloodletting. I was blindsided and it was entirely my fault. I deserved every minute of what was the most uncomfortable interview of my life. I fumbled through the LC questions neither were even that hard tbh, I was just mentally frozen which took me entirely off my game. It was so bad, but it set me on a path of real education. It made me realize that career growth now requires more than just experience. Even though knowledge and experience with LC grind, sys design prep, etc may not be specific to your role, it's absolutely a skill you have to master. Know the game and just suck it up and play it. It was the worst interview of my life, but I'm so much better for it. I had an E6 interview at FB today. I may not have done well enough to pass their bar, but I held my own. And one of these I will. What's yours? TC:🥜 but low COL so basically FIRE #interview
I had similar experience. Worked at Microsoft for long time and had zero interview skills. Interviewed at a couple places and no idea how to handle interviews. Did a lot of studying and passed FB interview.
I had pretty much the same experience and the same exact context. It was jarring.
Right? It's like walking into class having no idea it's test day.
Exactly! For a brief while it made me feel stupid. Brief... Because as I reviewed the material (later) it was easy enough to get back on the horse. But I cannot forget to this day how unprepared I felt.. Holy shit
Bombed my first ever Google phone screen. I was stupid and naive enough to schedule it at the very beginning of my interviewing journey. Problem wasn't too hard but I had not interviewed in years. Felt bad for an entire week.
Similar. Hadn’t interviewed in years and took an interview with a small coding portion. It was just printing a binary tree in order but I hadn’t thought of this problem in forever and was totally unprepared. Bombed and started studying DS&A…
Loved this story. Good luck with your interviews!
