Considering leaving my current senior IC position at a research lab. I'm currently making about 133k base with a generous 14% 401k match, but fully in-office. I also get a 20% merit based bonus which I usually nail which brings me to about 158k cash in hand. Maxar is offering 132k base with a 4% 401k match, so I'm looking at a haircut of about 40k/year. No bonuses. However, Maxar is fully remote as an option and the work aligns well with my career goals (more day-to-day IC level engineering work as opposed to research/writing papers/going to conferences) Both of these positions are in Denver, where I'm currently located. Any advice from the wise folks of Blind? Am I an idiot for considering such a large cut in comp?
14% 401k match is just wild
Really depends on how old you are
How much do you value remote work & your career goals? Is it 40k? The answer to this question will define your decision. On another note, can you share your interview experience?
Yeah it was pretty easy if you know what you're doing! 1 leetcode easy, mostly just conversational after that.
It only makes economic sense to take the offer if you move to a better CoL state. It makes emotional sense to take it if you can’t stand the office.
Stay where you are. That 401k match is bae
Nice to see some tc in my league after looking at exorbitant offers from California.
Not everyone lives in Silicon Valley brah don't sweat it! We're well paid.
If you are a person on visa then Why don't you try to use your research publications to file an EB1 and get a GC? If you are citizen then definitely make the decision on remote vs in person and how much it really means to you.
I'm just a normal US citizen. A rarity on Blind :^)
Leaning to your current position. But how do you feel like working here? How’s the commute to your office? Is it too long or too bad that you don’t want it anymore? Is anyone in the office untolerable? Or are you consumed by working in an office? Too many meetings to attend? Too much work makes you burnt out? If the office isn’t too bad, I’m leaning toward your current position.
Not sure if you made your decision yet or not -> Maxar is a disaster right now with layoffs, acquisition, reorgs, company splitting, and on top of that I’m like 80% sure they’re going to try to get rid of all remote work “if you want to work in the big leagues that’s how we do it here” -CEO a few months ago
Are there any teams that are considered safe with Maxar? Like cleared roles? Also what is PTO like for Maxar?

Stay where you are, try applying somewhere else if you are unhappy, but do not take a cut willingly…
