How bad is it at Genentech?

I was one of those who 'fled' Roche Molecular Systems in a year's time, because of the horrific politics, and the severe lack of scientific and technical caliber that I had come to witness over at the Pleasanton, CA site. I hear that the situation is no better at Roche Sequencing Solutions and that it is a revolving door to this day. How is it at Genentech? Is it worthwhile considering opportunities over there? I have recruiters reaching out, but I am pretty jaded about Roche at this time. Aviv Regev seems to be the only beckoning light, else I am not inspired to work for Roche ever again. Thanks.

Can’t comment on GNE, but can confirm from old coworkers that RSS is a dumpster fire.

Can u elaborate more? I’m a new grad at Roche Diagnostics currently

Not the place that you want to stay long if you really want to learn state-of-the-art technologies. Just look for scientific caliber in your 'leadership' stream, and you'll have your answer. People around you will make up for their severe incompetencies with politics. You'll come out burned and not having learned much scientifically and technically.

I work in digital pathology - ML. I would say we work on cutting edge more

I like Genentech. If you're looking for R&D I recently read a report in Fierce that our performance is doing really well for new therapy.

I know a few people who work there, and both of them love it.

FWIW, my coworker fled Genentech in 2017 because of horrible wlb and toxic culture. Not sure what the situation there is now.

It’s not great. Passive aggressive from old timers.

I worked in Genentech for three years then internally transfer to roche sequencing and it is about two years now and I am repenting my decision every single day. Roche sequencing is such a bad group - poor wlb, low salaries, less frequent promotions, too much politics, no feedbacks for managers, too much power in the hand of managers. Comparatively Genentech was good but that was in 2017. How is it in exact sciences?

Exact Sciences wUJE28 OP Aug 23, 2021

That is Roche culture in general. RSS just inherited the culture it seems. I like it at Exact Sciences thus far. There are a lot of acquisitions happening, and so things are a bit fluid these days. But if you can target divisions like Thrive, I'd say you'd be happy.

It’s the same old horror story, never ever come back. People are always looking to hop even with a pay cut. My department is under Aviv but no better than rest.

I had a friend who went to genetech for higher pay, he is talented guy, he returned back in 2 months,.. I heard it's torcher over there.

Google Bghtydp Aug 23, 2021

Avivs org is legit bc Roche doesn't touch it. anything that Roche touches has been destroyed (PD, Commerical, PT, etc.)

Genentech t5si0l Aug 23, 2021

But most of the managers and directors are internally transferred from Roche and Ventana

How much time did you take to move from Roche to facebook?
