What are the differences between Citadel and Citadel Securities? How do the following compare? - Type/quality of work - WLB (hours) - Culture - Compensation - Career Growth Overall, which one is better for a New Grad SWE? TC/YOE: Still in school #swe #newgrad #citadel #citadelsecurities
Definitely CitSec for SWE
I'm sure random people from the Internet have a very educated view of this.
Citadel is ASS dood
I would argue securities is more garbage than the hedge fund itself. Tech work in the hedge fund is more likely to be similar to the work you'd do in the tech industry (think backend systems, web dev, Python bullshit). Even though this is "cost center" work, that's a good thing in the sense that it translates to normal tech. Sure, in CitSec you'd do work that's "closer to PNL". But from my experience that just means specializing in niche work that the real money makers (quants) need to be done. This obviously leads to higher stress roles, and you might be paid 20-40% more for your troubles if you're lucky. But you're trading off having to do more niche work (trading systems, low latency, research platforms), and growth won't be close to that of a quant. Anecdotally, I've found that the people attracted to the supposed "higher impact work", and blindly fanboy CitSec are on average more insufferable/no lives. Prepare to work 50-60 hours as a floor with people that have really drank all the Citadel kool aid. Again just my own (biased) experience, but I've met more "normal" people at Citadel the hedge fund than securities.
