First opportunity in tech but hearing a lot about culture and 996. Worth accepting at TikTok? What’s the reality, is it really 12hrs 6 days a week? TC 170k 140base 30rsu
Post offer if you want good advice
9/9 is real. It’s not 6, more like 5 sometimes 5.5
With RTO do they require all 12 in office?
Short answer is no but long answer is no as long as you don’t care about being promoted
The only value of working at TikTok is getting a heavy comp package to leverage.
If you don’t need to take this offer, I’d pass. I turned down an offer from them after they sent the official letter and it included several changes we hadn’t discussed. The offer letter included working from 9am-6pm onsite every day, but during the interview process we’d only discussed a remote role. Being available till 9pm. I thought it was just an error at first, but when I asked they said that was their offer. Felt like and seemed like a bait and switch to me where they expected me to not read the actual offer details. Even better, after I declined a laptop and first day info all arrived. It was really strange. Glad I passed on that one.
So your TC is 140k, potentially 160k avg. including bonus. Great offer if it's your only offer, else take whatever else you got going. Only join if you're Chinese and love 996
I could see myself committing to long days on occasion but curious if it’s demanded of you every single day
They give you a breather on Saturday, as thats a Sunday in China. Long days are a norm, you'll sometimes get a break and do a regular 35-40hr week, which happens 3-4 weeks in the entire year.
It depends a bit on your team, where you are in the value chain, your level and the type of work you're doing. If you have a companion/main team in China, then you *will* have to be available at night. If you release any bugs (assuming you're in engineering), then you will very likely hear about it post 8 pm pacific time and really should make an effort to fix it ASAP. The teams in China *do* work almost all of the time, and from what I understood, that culture was initially brought here to the US when ByteDance came. Over the years, there have been different initiatives to slowly cut back on that though.
Hey how long after your final interview did you hear back ? And what’s your yoe ? Is this an engineering role ? I had my last interview with the HM last week, still waiting to hear back.
Nope , don’t join , you will be out searching for a job again
Please elaborate more, what is the driver
Read the reviews , they are a extremely toxic company with the worst managers. You can join but know that it’s literally the worst company on the planet, 996 , unreasonable expectations and very pathetic work culture.
TikTok is fine, bytedance is bad. What's the offer?
One is owned by the other, right? What’s the difference in culture?
That ain't true. TikTok US is a shit show.
