About to accept an EM offer at Yelp London with September start (UK long notice period) and now stressed out with US recession news. Is there a realistic risk of offers being rescinded between now and September? How about layoffs given looming recession? Context: currently in a recession-proof company, safe team and generally love what I do. ~40% TC pump with the move. Would particularly appreciate comments from Yelpers. #Yelp #layoff #london
You are gonna regret so hard not taking yelp offer
Yelp is not affected
What makes you say that?
@OP Yelp is profitable now despite what’s happening in the economy, but no one knows what’ll happen in the future.
Honestly I would stay ...again it's risk vs reward ...I am on visa so I can't risk much...in your case it might be different
Yelp is super stable, tons of cash in the bank and already saw the worst case scenario when all our customers were forced to close indefinitely at the start of the pandemic in 2020. Layoffs in sales did take place, but I am not aware of any engineering managers being laid off at any point then or earlier. Imo you can join with confidence!
The incoming recession is going to hit so much harder than 2020 (discretionary spending will plummet) and you guys had to layoff/furlough over 2k employees then.
None were in tech. OP will be fine.
"Yelp lays off or furloughs more than 2,000 employees due to coronavirus" https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/09/yelp-lays-off-or-furloughs-more-than-2000-employees-due-to-coronavirus.html
Yeah that’s what we’re talking about above, there has been 1 layoff at Yelp since it was founded 20 years ago and that was right at the start of covid, it was 95% sales and office staff like workplace services/baristas and about half were brought back. I only know of one engineer who was laid off at that point out of the hundreds I know personally and they were already on a pip which is rare at Yelp.
We did layoff a bunch of engineers. Around 50 iirc. But Sam did the right thing to make it 4 days work to minimize the impact on engineers.
We’re pretty desperate to get people into the door, soooooo many open positions right now. In addition attrition has been bad recently for some orgs, so I’d say your risk is probably low. It also means that you’re likely in for a stressful job though. Lots of LDN teams are (for now) split with or managed by west coast teams/folks, meaning long evenings and long feedback loops, especially for an EM role (lots of coordination)
Thank you. This is helpful. Care to elaborate on need to to work with US teams and long evenings? Can I dm you?
Many teams are now distributed across US, Canada, UK and Germany so sometimes it will require staying online later in your day (or earlier for us on Pacific time). Generally we have a health wlb and if you can’t attend then you can’t so no big deal (but you should communicate that right away if you get a calendar invite outside of your working hours). However, some flexibility may required for specific teams. We also are trying to shift our culture to more asynchronous processes which will reduce needing to overlap with teammates across the globe. I’m on pacific time and have teammates in Eastern time and Central Europe time. So we try to find a time that’s acceptable for all but the giant time difference (for Germany and Wedt coast) does mean our folks in Europe stay on a bit late once or twice a week for team meetings.
Yoe? What was the interview process?
9 years. HM screen: System design based on my projects. "Onsite" : 5 interviews mixture of behavioural, leadership, business acumen, management and system design/technical.
No chance if rescinding. We're desperately looking to hire in UK/Germany/Canada
