Asking for a friend who recently got an IC4 SWE offer from Yelp. Recruiter asking for comp expectations. Any pointers ? Current company - Square YOE - 6 Current TC - 245k
Yelp is getting some serious bad press. Beware
People love to hate Yelp. It will pass.
What bad press are they getting?
Don’t come
Why?
I am quite surprised here that you are considering leaving Square for Yelp. If money is the only reason here, I fail to see how it can be a good move. Square has a growth rate north of 40%, whereas Yelp has it at 6-7%. Thinking long term, over 4-5 years your Square RSUs should be lot higher in value than today, offsetting any potential comp increase you may get joining Yelp.
This is the wrong way to think about the value of RSUs. Growth expectations for both stocks are theoretically priced in today, and so the only way Square's stock appreciates is if they over deliver on today's expectations (which is def possible). Not disagreeing overall that Square is the better stock to hold, just clarifying that shares don't appreciate by 50% just because the company grows by 50%.
Stocks appreciates due to more than just over delivering on todays expectations. They appreciate as new products are launched, new markets are penetrated, additional network effects are unlocked, when total addressable market grows, industry tailwinds work in the company's favor, guidance is issued upwards, and equally importantly when the investor perception about the growth story of a company becomes stronger or when more data points come in to validate the existing perception. You may choose to disagree but there is lot more to pricing of a stock than what you suggest. As an active investor there are many more things I have learned about what affects the stock pricing but won't go into it for now, don't want to bore the readers :P
Don’t come x2. This place is doomed on several levels. Only good for new grads not industry hires.
Why doomed?
Don’t listen to the naysayers, yelp is a really good place to work.
What makes it great?
Agree, Yelp is great
Why do you like it?
Why would anyone want to move from Square to Yelp?
