Yelp vs Amazon

Trying to decide between senior software engineer @ yelp vs sde2 @ Amazon aws. Leaving the comp aside for a minute, which one offers better growth personally and professionally? Also, how promising is yelp’s future? Seems like they’re not doing too well lately... Any advice?

Amazon no doubt

Any reason(s) besides comp?

If you leave comp aside, I would say Yelp. Very good culture, lot of learning opportunities, you'll have bigger impact.

I’m surprised at the “better opportunities at Yelp” people. Amazon is growing *fast* generally and in a lot of places. If you get on a cool team, of which there are hundreds, you can be doing stuff Yelp can only dream of

Total Yelp engineering force is 600 engineers, Amazon has... actually I have no idea how many, but at least 10x that. Definitely less teams to work from, but the ability to move upwards to a tech lead or something is higher, IMO.

You will learn a shit ton in AWS, I have no doubt about that. If your only criteria is personal and professional growth, you can’t match the scale at which AWS operates. Not to say you won’t learn anything at yelp though.

Breadth of things to work on also tips heavily in Amazon’s favor.

Hands down Amazon. Yelp is not a fun place anymore, it used to be very engineer driven place but things have changed drastically that all of the good engineers I know have left or are leaving soon in the future. The quality of engineers and systems is pretty average at Yelp.

Yelp is doing fine and continues to grow as a company. I can say that Yelp has great growth potential for good employees both professionally and personally. I don't know much about AWS, but I do know that it's hot for the job industry, so that might have better opportunity for professional growth. I know many people getting certified in AWS and it looks to have a promising future!

I'd say Yelp, but I'm obviously biased. AWS is one of the few Amazon teams I'd probably take over Yelp, that stuff is cutting edge.

I’m happy at Yelp!
