What crime did trump commit?
I currently work at FedEx, joined only 7 months ago. I joined as Lead Data Analyst (designation) but have been playing role of a TechProgramMgr+TechProduct Owner (mixed type work) because there was need for such a person in team and I expressed interest and they gave me work, and good thing is I have received an internal (FedEx) offer for Sr. Tech Product Manager (b2b) role (will have the new title and move to the new team in a month). Base - 115, Bonus 10%, No stock. In Memphis. I have received an offer from Staples for Sr. Tech Prod, Mgr. (b2c) Location is Boston but they said they can change it to Memphis (or any other city), i.e. Remote, if I want to (though I may move to Boston because my best friends live there). Base 150, Yearly Bonus 15%,Joining 10K. If I move to Boston (which I intend to) then I see no money gain (adjusting for COL). In FedEx my job is secured, no fear of any layoff, but given the current economy I am not sure about job security at Staples and being on H1B job security is a key concern for me. I am having interview (final round scheduled) for a Sr. PM role at Amazon, though I am not sure I will clear it (since Amazon interview outcome is very vague) so that is not a big criteria in my decision making. Seeking input on what should I do? Decline Staples offer or take it? thanks a lot. #productmanager #product
I find Boston to be much more appealing than Memphis. That + it sounds like YOU would rather be there, which matters more than what I find appealing. Also, Staples HQ is actually west of Boston, in a smaller city. Depending on your goals / preferences, you can likely find something substantially more affordable if you choose not to live in Boston proper, and this would likely benefit your commute. I also perceive the Boston tech scene as stronger than the one in Memphis. So that might be something to consider as well, in the event you want to look for new roles in the future. Lastly, which role is more interesting to you? Do you want to build a B2B or B2C skill set more right now in your career? Which team / product interests you more? Good luck!
Thanks for the input. To add - my roles (current and new) at FedEx are also remote. I had moved to Memphis because I wanted to be here for 1 year and then move to somewhere in East Coast/MA (which I will do in December anyway) but the Salary will remain same if/when I move to MA. Role wise, I would say both are tied from my interest point of view - the Stapels role will have more of actual user analysis part (core PM work) and FedEx will have more of API planning/tech side work and I am equally interested in both. I thought about it and role wise there is no clear winner for me, a tie. Money wise, if I move to MA then Staples win but I can wait and don't have to move right away I can move later when I find something even higher paying from some other company in future - no compulsion to move to MA right away, so that criteria becomes less important now. Job security wise - FedEx never ever does nay layoff (it is guaranteed) and that is a big thing that is weighing heavily in my mind. Please advise.
btw, out of curiosity, since you know about the Boston area and Staples HQ being in Framingham (which still is much costlier than Memphis, same apartment rent is 60% more) - did you work for Staples in the past? if so, in PM org? thanks.
Op can you please use paragraphs
Hey @op were you able to transition to the TPM role at FedEx? I worked as a BIE and thought of checking a couple of things with you. Can I DM?
Staples is not doing too good as a matter of fact I think the business might be dwindling for a couple of years and I don’t see a lot of new hires anyway so I would suggest staying at FedEx if not start interviewing somewhere else
Which did you pick? Been at Staples over a year in prod org and I would say the future overall is actually pretty bright. We're competing well with Amazon Business and knocking the pants off Office Depot and with the trend of RTO our financials are pretty solid for a while. Nothing is guaranteed and if there's a larger downturn at some point we should be impacted. I would say as far as prod and dev teams it depends. I know one team that completely turned over in 3 months but others have been more stable. I think some things we def suffer from is lower than average pay in what is still a really competitive market still. There are some other negatives as well but I've generally been impressed with the overall direction and financials considering how the pandemic initially really hurt the business but it's really turned around. We're even beating some pre-covid numbers.
I agree with this. Been remote here for over a year and a half and had quite positive experiences on the teams I’ve been on / interacted with. Really cool initiatives as well that are trying to make headway at Staples to push the tech forward off of the legacy systems and into a quite modern tech stack / and platform. I will say though that I’ve heard of and seen some bureaucracy and layoffs due to “restructuring” of teams. A little sketchy, but it seems to be more higher management, unless the economic and job market conditions get worse which may impact more people (but I agree the future seems bright).
Do you guys still feel the same way? Might get an offer from Staples for a Sr Manager roles for 190K base. Should I consider it? How's the promotion scene in Staples? Any insights will be appreciated. Thanks!
Staples has layoffs every year. It’s not a stable company.
Thank you so much for the input. That is what I gathered as well (from online search), that it is not a stable company (while I know FedEx is like the most stable for job security).
