Facebook or Bloomberg? Career or life?

#facebook #bloomberg #offer #tech 1. title: B is senior, F is E4. Both are software engineer roles. 2. total comp: almost the same. B: base 191k, bonus 39k, sign-on 40k, relo 10k. F: base 160k, RSU 260k/4 yr, sign-on 50k, target bonus 10%. B is 280k first year, 240k with 5-15% increase after, F is 291k first year, 240k with refresh after. 3. location: I prefer NYC because of families. B is NYC, F said no E4 openings in NYC now, only west coast. F’s offer has Seattle as office location. But my friend said you can choose NYC after bootcamp or internals transfer. Any data points or insights? i appreciate in advance. 4. Team. B is trading system called EMSX(Secruities Exeucution), F is unknown until bootcamp finish. 5. WLB: B is prob 40 hrs/week, F is averagely worse(i guess). 6. Reputation: B is great fintech, F is best tier? YOE 4 yr, current TC under 200k. Any info relevant are welcomed. thanks a lot!

Sounds like a personal decision for you.. career or life optimization. Although I think that’s being over dramatic, as you can probably still maintain a decent life in Seattle at Fb, also LCOL compared to NYC (although I’m not a big Seattle guy). Bloomberg is still a good company w good comp, and you can be around family and such. Blind obviously is going to tell you to join Fb (it is a career app after all), but I guess it depends on what you’d rather optimize for

Microsoft EHfK02 OP Jun 3, 2020

Thanks for ur comment. You’re very insightful. Anything you know about FB NYC or internal transfer?

FLYR aNmu82 Jun 3, 2020

No I know nothing about it haha just giving a broad outlook on it. Gl though!

Bloomberg yopuyycgss Jun 3, 2020

Your effective hourly rate will be higher in your first year at Bloomberg, but your comp will increase faster at FB. Btw everyone with >=2 YOE is "senior" at Bloomberg - it has no higher SWE level.

Microsoft EHfK02 OP Jun 3, 2020

You’re correct. B is kind of too flat in terms of levels.

Bloomberg yopuyycgss Jun 3, 2020

There are tons of management levels above senior SWE at Bloomberg. I agree that the lack of higher IC levels is a problem for the company, both in terms of SWE retention and large scale software architecture decisions.

I was negotiating with FB and other company once. After I got the offers, I told FB that other company has an edge because I know what team I am joining and what people I will work with, while it vague in FB. Eventually they set up calls with a couple of teams I was interested in and was able to join directly rather than via boot camp. I think your choice does really depends on a team, hence you can try this fb trick ad well. Both options are great I think.

Microsoft EHfK02 OP Jun 3, 2020

It’s a very useful trick. I’ll give it a shot. But my recruiter said E4 openings only in west coast. I doubt it. Is it because if I choose NYC, she won’t get any bonus from my case?

Amazon fWiX20 Jun 3, 2020

No location shouldn't matter. Nyc is genuinely hard to get into especially as e4

Facebook iwnsowbzov Jun 3, 2020

Negotiate more for FB. And NYC is hard to get into if you are below E5 or aren’t a top performing return intern

Bloomberg yopuyycgss Jun 3, 2020

Is that true even if you're already located in NYC?

Facebook iwnsowbzov Jun 3, 2020

Yeah FB dgaf

Amazon Rose93 Jun 3, 2020

Family comes first I’m in the same position trying to find a job in nyc from Seattle. I hope you find your way home. I would take B and work there for few and try to get to FB In NYC.

Lyric ofjsn Jun 3, 2020

Why would you ever want to work for fb? Bloomberg all the way. And it’s in nyc

Microsoft EHfK02 OP Jun 3, 2020

To be objective, F is generally better than B at tech, which might be more beneficial for further career.

Facebook easzss Jun 3, 2020

Lyric has an agenda lol. Avoid listening to naysayers.

Procore GMSL65 Jun 3, 2020

You can't change in bootcamp

Microsoft EHfK02 OP Jun 3, 2020

Thanks. You mean I can’t change the office location of the offer when choose team in bootcamp, correct?

Procore GMSL65 Jun 3, 2020

Yeah

Bloomberg sheblind Jun 3, 2020

B beats FB at code quality and work-life balance. FB beats B at career/comp growth. A decent number of people move from B to FB so if location is important you can do B then try E5 at FB in 2 years. It will probably take 2 years for E4 -> E5 anyways.

Microsoft EHfK02 OP Jun 3, 2020

It’s a new angle. It inspired me. Thx.

Bloomberg yopuyycgss Jun 4, 2020

Is code quality really better at Bloomberg? I'm skeptical. It's great in some places and horrendous in others, and everything in between.

Bloomberg boolea Jun 3, 2020

From what I have seen, you can reach 300k fairly quickly at Bloomberg as an IC and then switch to FB as an E5 which should be in 350-400k TC range. Bloomberg has improved the bar amazingly in the past 4-5 years and their ICs are in general known to be smart and of higher quality say compared to Amazon, Microsoft. I would suggest choosing Bloomberg and then switching to FB NYC after 2-3 years!

Microsoft EHfK02 OP Jun 3, 2020

Thx a lot. Just curious, where did u get the data points of the hiring bar for Microsoft and Amazon? From you friends?

Bloomberg yopuyycgss Jun 4, 2020

This is BS. Reaching $300k as an IC at Bloomberg is exceptional. Excluding those working in AI, <5% of IC engineers earn this much at Bloomberg, and most are recent hires who started at or near $300k. @boolean if your experience has been different, I'd love to hear more details via DM.

I recently had to make the same decision as you and had to choose between FB E4 and Bloomberg. I went with BB. See if you can use your FB offer as leverage to get your BB comp up. Worst case your FB offer should still be valid for the next year and you can wait for headcount to open up in NYC. If you don’t like your team at BB it’s easy to transfer too. NYC ftw.

Bloomberg Enig16 Jun 4, 2020

Wow what made you choose Bloomberg over FB?

JPMorgan Chase OlEG63 Jun 4, 2020

I didn’t know what team I’d work for at FB whereas Bloomberg work aligned well with where I wanted to grow. Also, comp at BB was better to me given that’s it all cash (they were also competitive with every offer I had). And it’s a safer bet in this economy too.
