Not many regular PMs at Google as far as I know
TPM is expected to make technical contributions at a level one below their PM level. So a TPM L5 is evaluated against an L4 tech role. If they don’t hold to that standard they lose the T designation. As a result I think most L7 and above TPMs become PM, as it’s harder to show expertise at those elevated levels along with their other increased responsibility.
I don’t get it. So you’re saying a TPM writes code? I never knew TPMs as devs. If not, what do you mean by “technical contributions”?
Technical judgement, not technical contribution.
Not all TPMs manage SW projects. All of my insights are more HW based. So think of them as reviewing design packages, contributing to architecture reviews, etc.
