"The world's first open search engine platform that summarizes the web for users with useful and actionable content. No ad-targeting." What do you think of this: https://techcrunch.com/2021/11/09/you-com-lands-20m-series-a-to-reimagine-the-search-engine/? Can it threaten Google?
Everybody gotta put food on their table. It’s about time when they start a rat race for the advertisements. They will be called a pirated version of google.
Ad free, but for how long? Google once hated the idea of Ads, look at them now with an ad every 2 mins on youtube. Same for FB, once heavily protesting and now the king of personalizing ads.
It says no ad targeting, not ad free
yeah, and wait until they find out how much more you make with targeted ads. also, showing me diaper commercials at this point will just annoy me. If you are going to show me ads, at least show me stuff that I might be remotely interested in
Let me preface this by saying I just tried you.com, I actually like the interface. Unpopular opinion though: the majority of people don't actually care about privacy from large corporations or the government. They just want convenience. This is a niche market with a large, kinda well-known player already (duckduckgo). It's an especially niche market outside a small portion of the developed world.
Don’t trust on DuckDuckGo. I read some Job posting somewhere where requirement was to being collect end user data in DuckDuckGo. Since then I am wary of even using it
Ah well, I don't care about duckduckgo either, was just making a point. Given up on privacy from the FAANGs, I just settled on it not being obviously intrusive to me. I.e. I just set "do not track" to on in my browser, turn off all account settings to allow targeting, and don't bother about other stuff.
I don't think it will work but I'm open to it, the biggest major issue I see is the same problem with laugh tracks People hate the idea of laugh tracks, but on average they make shows more enjoyable, same with targeted ads Targeted searches also mean Google can show exactly what I want on the first 2 or 3 results. Ads aside, a different search UX would be cool to try
"In terms of monetization, the company vows never to sell your data to a third party, but for now they are simply trying to get the design down and grow the user base. Socher says the company will concentrate on monetization later. There will probably be ads at some point, he says, but without connecting the query to a user, and without cluttering the results. As an example, if you search for air purifier you may get an ad for that, but the company displaying that ad won’t have direct access to data about you, as is the case now with most online ads. The devil will be in the details here, of course, but this is how Socher is describing it." lol
What's wrong with ads? How much Microsoft has spent on Bing? Probably more than 20m, and duckduckgo is there too
A dude I worked with from just left to go there and I really liked him so I hope this company pops off lol
The bottom of the page says powered by Microsoft. Are they using Bing
This is how Bing makes money. Most of the"other" search engines are powered by Bing.
Interface looks pretty good. It does say You can choose between personalized or truly private experience
