I'm interviewing for an ML role in GSK. The work itself sounds very interesting. I wonder if there is anyone here that worked there in a similar role and can provide some insights. Also if someone worked both there and in FAANG, would be happy to hear how the transition felt. I don't have yet TC numbers, but expect them to be lower than my current TC. TC: 400K after stock fall (E6 at Meta).
I would be surprised if you get 300, why don’t you try for a Director of Engineering position? It’s not unheard of to comeback later to FAANG for an L8 or L7 position from there.
What tech stack they using at GSK?
Do not work in ML at pharma. To match or exceed your comp, you will have to be an eng. leader. Except can't just waltz into drug discovery the same way MLEs ping pong between FAANGs. I'm telling you now the culture is old, the pace is slow, and there's little ML/software knowledge, but you're expected to deliver big anyway. The main issue is that ML is seen as ~magic~ and you will be expected to be a magician, accordingly. Fuck that lol
I haven't worked at FAANG, but GSK ai/ML team is really good for pharma and run more like a tech startup.
Great to hear! Did you work in other non-pharma techs before? I'm curious to understand how they compare. The research topics themselves sound very interesting. Since I only worked at tech before, I'm less aware of the disadvantages (other than comp but I'm willing to trade-off some of it if the work is interesting). Also I'm wondering if the current economical situation in the world may have some negative impact on the ai divisions (e.g., divisions will get closed and etc).
Gsk is pretty solid in financials. Our recently released financial statement shows growth in all the last 3quaters So layoff is not on the radar for tech guys or others in general at gsk. But culture is a laid back attitude and your comp will take a hit. Better to join after after 40s for a relaxed life.
Avoid. They get a lot of press for their industry and academic collaborations, but the infra for building research and production-level models is very nascent for ML compared to most. Although the engineer talent is pretty good, overall product strategy is non-existent
GSK recruiting process sucks. I had a verbal offer previously, and they just ghosted me with the economic scenario changing. Overall I liked the people, but I just cant trust their process anymore unless they give the offer in writing.
Gsk isn't slow. Your are out of budget. 😁😁 If over budget Or cheaper options available, then ghosting happens
