Is it safe to buy from a private seller? What are the steps? How do I transfer ownership if mechanic check and carfax report looks good?
Bought all my vehicles over the past 12 years from Craigslist or Facebook marketplace expect the newest one we got less than a year ago from a dealership. I regret going to the dealership as I thought it would be an easier experience paying by card vs getting a ton of cash. Also found many small things wrong with it over the following months I had initially missed. Strongly prefer directly buying from someone and it usually saves a lot of money. Make sure they have a clean title. That will need to filled out and sign the transfer ownership section on that. They should also give you a bill of sale. I believe those two documents are all you need from the seller. Go to the DMV and pay the fees (depending on your state may have to pay sales tax). Look up on DMV state site to see what other documents to bring drivers license and maybe proof of insurance. Also figure out how you'll get the amount of cash you'll need. Banks usually have limits on how much cash you can withdraw in a certain period of time.
What make would you suggest for used cars on Facebook? Hyundai Elantras are pretty reasonable. Are those good?
Yes that would be a good one. More importantly check the Kelly blue book price to make sure it's priced reasonably.
It depends on the seller but i have bought cars on facebook marketplace from pricate sellers. If the carfax is good you should be ok. What state do you live in? Dont buy a car on facebook without inspecting it in person. In CA they have a pink slip (certificate of title) which they lie on the purchase price and sign over the car to you. Call your insurance company asap.
I have no insurance. State NJ
Yes. Take the car to a mechanic for full checkup. I bought two cars on craigslist and never done any mechanic checks and they have been great. Still love my cars
