Career advice to move from IC to manager

I am a Sr. software engineer currently at L4. I lead several key projects at Adobe and hoping to get promoted internally. I have 8+ years of experience and my ultimate goal is to get to a managerial position either within Adobe or elsewhere. Can I try for manager positions outside of Adobe while being an IC? Will it help if I do certifications or part time MBA course? What is it that I need to highlight on my Resume to become eligible for a manager position elsewhere? Any help will be greatly appreciated šŸ™šŸ» TC: šŸ„œ, Exp: 8+ yrs

IC to manager at same company is common in tech, Iā€™d explore that before trying external.

I see. So whatever i share may not be completely applicable for you. However, irrespective of country key things which are looked into hiring a manager 1. How long has one been a manager. Courses don't count as primarily people are checking if you got hands dirty or not. 2. What Kind of your responsibilities you took? This could help you make up for 1 if you took some managerial responsibilities but without any manager experience this would get pretty less importance. 3. Completion of one hiring, one review cycle. Apart from above, for beginner managers companies prefer to give their own engineers this opportunity instead of bringing one from outside with no managerial experience. I would suggest making move internally and post few months at job, you can start exploring opportunities outside.

No harm in interviewing. You just need to sell yourself as a fit for the role.
