Any suggestions for teaching a 2nd grader (US age 7) Math? We have an iPad with osmo and I'm going to buy some curriculum based work books. What have you found works?
My kids have really enjoyed BeastAcademy Online.
We started beast academy this year for my 1st grader and 4th grader using the online version. It’s like $90 for 1 kid or $150 for 2 kids for the whole year. I find the material very engaging and kids can work independently- the videos do a good job explaining stuff. I find it works well for kids who don’t like repetitive stuff. My 4th grader is hooked to the puzzles.
My only complaint about these online systems is that you need to get a tablet with a good pen. My first grader solves most problems in his head and I’ve tried to teach him on the side how to use scratch paper, since one of the most important skills to learn in math is how to visualize problems in a way that you can actually write something down on paper and turn a problem into a mostly mechanical calculation.
Khan academy , 2nd grade must be free on youtube. It’s probably the best. Ideally you should be teaching the kid if you are a parent , but I can understand, kids usually don’t pay attention to parents:)
If your kids aren’t paying attention to the parent, who will they listen to. The better question is where’s the parenting class that was never taught to this kind of parent?
Its often the opposite. My wife is a swim instructor and I'm a football coach so both pretty good at teaching kids. It's very common for kids to not take direction from parents the same way they would a teacher or coach that isn't a parent or friend. That said I coach my son and he takes instruction from me very well. I am trying to help him in anyway I can with Math, as it's not something I've done for over 30 years a few pointers would be great.
Bay area?
Yes
I think you need a pencil, paper and the willingness to sit with your 7yo.
That's exactly what I am doing. But as a non qualified teacher spending an hour a day doing basic maths isn't my specialist subject and is boring for him. Trying to find ways to ensure I teach what will benefit him, align with the school curriculum and also keep him engaged.
Play dice and card games with them.
Thanks, we do dice games, will introduce card games as well.
ProdigyGame.com We don't just do prodigy, but it's fun and good. Khan academy is good too.
