Tl;dr they see it as beneath them. In the latter half of the 20th century, anti-intellectualism pervaded popular American culture. The archetype of the A/V club geek, the socially stunted basement hacker, and the ugly zitty kid whose only friends were the 'A's on his report card, were rife in American media. This was followed by the Indian tech support nerd stereotype, and irrational fears that all of software would be outsourced to India. It's only after Bill Gates became the richest man in the world selling software, the runaway success of the major Internet companies, Google's publicity as the coolest workplace imaginable (a reputation that eventually transferred to the rest of tech), the viral way in which social media gripped the zeitgeist of the noughts (along with a couple more nerd mega-billionaires), and firehose Asian immigration (from which arose the unbeatable Asian valedictorian stereotype) did the vice grip of anti-intellectualism loosen on the software profession. Meanwhile, the rest of the world (unaffected by anti-intellectualism) was training scores of software professionals who saw it as the easiest way to get to America - and of course, it worked.

This country not only invented software, but also CDMA, space tech, nuclear bombs, the light bulb, the automobile, vibrators, airplanes… the list goes on. Yeah, talk about a bunch of anti-intellectuals 😂
Well, it wasn’t as high paying of a job back then either.
The reason is that you can’t hold a visa over someone’s head and force them to work long hours if they’re a US citizen so tech companies prefer people they can do that to
It is simply because US has only 5% of world population but 80% IT giants who literally monopolize everything in this business.
This is the answer ^.
There are better ways to make money if you’re a cream of the crop American.
It's become less so recently with the iPad generation but not by much. The US is obsessed with vanity. That is why the best American companies are primarily sales and marketing that outsource everything else.
Can you give some examples?
Real reason is American born don’t wanna be treated like slaves…
They're underrepresented because comp sci has a reputation for being a lot of work, and Americans hate math also.
