Meta seems to be super bloated. Every tom dick and harry seems to be engineering leader(manager) on their linkedin in meta. How can ppl with 4 yrs of exp be managers - only in meta. Calling themselves leaders with starry headlines is how they differentiate on linkedin. Zuck needs a massive cleanup drive of managers, not ics #tech
You coulda fire 10,000 managers and not notice
He has said managers should be doing more individual contributions. I would expect lot of these Tom dick and harry to be on low performance path soon. Another way of attrition without giving severance.
Not in Facebook but most of the first level managers are still coding in my org as well as senior managers and some directors.
Then they are not spending time in understanding ics and developing the employees in their career growth if they are still coding
The Team Lead I directly report to at my current job is much better at developing employees than the Engineering Manager I reported to in my previous role, and the Team Lead codes regularly.
The bottom-up culture means managers at Meta have significantly less responsibilities than anywhere else too. The culling is inevitable.
Problem is other companies blindly follow.
Largest mistake of the last decade is too many people thinking they’re people managers when they are actually just really good ICs. Nothing wrong with being the respected veteran IC everyone goes for for advice. Stop wanting to be people managers for the “look” of being more important.
I’ve had a few people demand a senior manager title when they were being hired as an IC with no direct reports all because they want the “prestige” of management. It’s ridiculous.
4 yrs of IC experience became manager?
Many of meta E6 engineer cannot even compared with Google L4
it’s happening soon!! don’t worry
