Hello fellow blinders, I hope you're all doing well. I am currently working as an RTL Design Engineer in Siemens EDA(Mentor Graphics) India with around 4 years of experience in the VLSI industry. Lately, I've been contemplating the possibility of shifting my career to the United States or Europe within the same domain (RTL design/Verification). Although I am open to both US and Europe, I have a particular preference for the US as I understand that most of the opportunities related to my sector are concentrated there, while Europe offers comparatively fewer options with only a handful of companies. While I am aware that pursuing a Master's degree abroad is a common path to access international opportunities, I find myself at a point in my career where taking a full-time academic course might not be the most feasible option. So, I'm reaching out to this community to seek your valuable insights and guidance. I'd like to know: 1. Is it possible to secure a full-time role abroad in IP Design/Verif without pursuing a Master's degree? If so, what level of work experience is typically suitable for such opportunities, and how easy or difficult is it to be able to find such opportunities? 2. What strategies should I consider to increase my chances? Should I apprach HRs living abroad regarding opportunities? 3. Are there any specific companies, regions that you would recommend for someone in my situation? 4. I am also open to the possibility of joining a company in India, working here for a year or two in RTL Design/Verif, and then shifting abroad via the same company, in the same domain. Does anyone have information on companies that offer such opportunities? Sadly, at Mentor, you will most likely need to switch to a AE role to be able to do this. I would greatly appreciate any personal experiences, advice, or anecdotes that you can share. People who have successfully made this transition, I would like to know your journey and understand how you achieved this. Thank you all in advance for your time and assistance, and I'm eager to hear from those who have navigated similar paths or have valuable insights to offer. It is impossible for you to move to US as you won't get H1. First its lottery based ans opens only in April and i doubt any company would wait for it as you havr less than 20% chance of cracking lottery. Secondly US is full of RTL engineers with masters and PhD Other option is takinf internal transfer on L1 visa. But since you are Indian it would take you decades to get green card. On L1 you cannot change the company. If management is toxic or you are laid off, only option is to pack bags ans leave for India. Your options are come to US as student, study get into decades of green card race. Or get married to an American for green card. Other thing you can do is do an exceptional masters (PhD highly preferred), publish a lot at good places. You can easily get academic based h1 (its lottery except for non profit or academic institues), and qualify for faster EB1 green card. For an IIT professor with tons of publications, it would be child's play to get US green card sitting at home in India itself. Other option is O1 visa but you wont qualify for it either as it is for exceptional talent category. Other option yoy hage is to become Canadian citizen and move to US on TN. But even then it would take you decades as green card waiting is based on country of birth. Google all acronyms.
Thanks for sharing this information. Would you hapen to know about options available for Europe/UK?
Jobs would be less in EU/UK. Opportunity or pay wise, India comes second after US. There is vibrant RTL design requirements in Canada too. For money, don't move out of India. Switch jobs get multiple offers. RTL engineer with 5+ yesrs csn essily get base of 40 to 45L. If you want to move out for quality of life then its different.
Try the AE route. Switch to US with AE role and hope H1B gets picked up and then you can switch company to RTL design/DV role.
Already switched role to RTL design from a different domain some time back. Had a hell of a time doing it. I'm not very enthusiastic about getting into the long race of H1B only to change domain back to RTL design/DV after a couple of years. Plus, to be able to do it, one would need to have a strong profile in RTL Design, which I don't believe I have currently. Would prefer moving abroad directly for Design, or staying in India in design. Thanks for the advice btw !
Stay in India. If you are skilled and doing good work, you are being underpaid. If you want to know about the sky, someone had told me Google was giving 80LPA for ASIC design at 5yoe.
Thank you! I understand that there is no dearth of opportunities in India, but could you explain why moving abroad is not recommended?
Just see the number of posts ranting about job market here. That doesn't apply to India, economy and hiring is on a bull here. Plus it is a lot of hassle as Infinera said in the other comment. You can lead a fulfilling life in India. Don't lose hope. And don't care too much about money either.
