I’m a backend engineer at FB for 3 years, and recently got offer from DoorDash to do similar backend stuff. My current tc is ~310k e4. The new offer has tc ~400k e5. From level and tc, it makes sense to join dd. But from job stability aspect (layoff, wlb, etc), it seems FB is larger company and could be more stable in the future (though had layoff also) Any advice regarding this, should I accept offer or not?
I’d recommend DD so you can learn industry standard infra. Meta’s backend is proprietary and homegrown, such that you’re making yourself less attractive to future employers. Going to DD gives you more stability in the long run because you have tech on your resume that other places are using. Don’t get me wrong, Meta infra and scale is amazing, but doesn’t help if you want to go somewhere else eventually.
Go to DD. Surely the TC is greater than $80k though, or am I missing something? You can always come back to Meta with a higher title/TC.
Typo. Corrected.
Ah ok. I feel like if you have earned a $400k TC offer, then you can go anywhere even if DD gets into trouble later. Bet on yourself!
You’ve been at E4 for the past 3 years?
Yes. Almost 3 years.
Did you have to negotiate for that 400k offer or was that their first number?
It’s after negotiation with competing offer.
Got it, thanks. What were their first numbers?
Run don’t come unless you want to get directly terminated due to made up performance reviews
I heard there is no pip in dd. I am trying to understand what you say. If someone has high performance and contribute a lot to team (some team might be directly related to revenue), why would company do this ? Or is the whole team or org get deprioritized? When does what you mentioned happen.
As a new joiner you will probably be ok but I’ve seen multiple instances of people who were not low performers and working on a track to promotion suddenly labeled as low performers after mid year review. Some get the luxury of a focus/coaching plan and some don’t but its confirmed though that there isn’t an official PIP option anymore as they will directly terminate if they feel you’re still underperforming. Severance is 6 weeks
Where are you located? India?
US
40 or 400k tc? Lol
