Airbnb Racist?

I have an interview coming up with Airbnb but heard they are completely racist towards Indians. Should I even bother interviewing there? Can anyone confirm this?

How does that materialize?

Microsoft micrusade Jul 21, 2019

I think there are many far-east Asians in Pinterest, Airbnb. Maybe that culture is dominating.

Google maIb10 Jul 21, 2019

I don't think Indians can get interviews. Are you sure you are getting one? WTF

Tesla tslatsla OP Jul 21, 2019

I lied on my application so they will find out whe I go to the onsite :/

Amazon _101010 Jul 21, 2019

Why lie? Im white, non vet, male, with no disability. And i still put decline to answer for everything. I think application process should be blind to all that. But i dont understand lieing. Not like theyre gonna call u on it tho or actually figure out if you are, that would actually be racist lmao

Airbnb wailo Jul 21, 2019

I work with plenty of Indians...

Tesla tslatsla OP Jul 21, 2019

Are they real indians?

Airbnb wailo Jul 21, 2019

Yes... not sure why airbnb would want to discriminate against Indians or how it could even do it. It’s just like any other interview process.

Microsoft stink Jul 21, 2019

Yes they are - 100% attest to this , I have many friends who have personally experience it - some even rejected offers because they couldn’t stand it

Airbnb wailo Jul 21, 2019

They got an offer and they couldn’t stand what exactly?

Microsoft stink Jul 21, 2019

The over emphasis on crappy cultural attributes- for example cereal 🥣 entrepreneur :) I mean when you have a founder led company you have to be a slave . Also the tech is boring , I would say Expedia is more exciting and larger.

Microsoft oppensive Jul 22, 2019

I don’t know about AirBnb but mine and my friends anecdotes over the last 10 years tell me Indians tend to hire and promote mostly Indians even if they are obviously incompetent. Also there is a recent lawsuit filed by an American against Indian managers and leadership in Intel for discrimination and favoring Indians blatantly (it is in the news Google it). These Re accusation and anecdote but so are this post and the linked ones.

Microsoft Oiler Jul 22, 2019

The lawsuit is fake. The guy isn't American. He's South Korean. You're racist. Bang. There. Addressed it all. Screw job. Smoked clown.

Microsoft oppensive Jul 22, 2019

Huh? The lawsuit is fake because he is from South Korea? What a racist! So you think it is OK to discriminate Koreans but not Americans? BTW, he is an American if you read the article. He might be a naturalized citizen. In your mind, it is fine because he was not born in America or do you think someone with Korean blood can’t be American, only white? Wow caste is deep in you. You are racist, period. Blind was built by Koreans. You’re literally saying Koreans can be discriminated but Americans are not.

On a serious note, you will find many big tech companies have over 50% of engineers from India such as Microsoft, Cisco, Intel and Qualcomm. These companies use lots of venders who eventually convert to FTEs and also have large offices in India which transfers to HQ a lot. Considering most of venders are Indians, it is understandable. That sheer number also contributes to increasing the number as well because these companies hire per team which will use network a lot (usually from the same country). This is different from Google and FB which have hiring committee and mixed interviewers. Hence, it is more diverse in G and FB. For startups and preIPOs, Americans tend to prefer them as opposed to Indians who need stable jobs - usually well known old big tech companies. Even if you see many Asian names, most of them are actually Americans (surprise! There are many Asian Americans born in US). They tend to be pickier in communication; hence, English commutation could play a good role there. So it is not just AirBnb. You can pretty much see the similar trends at startups. If anything, Chinese will be harder to crack them due to language issue compared to Europeans and Indians. Another thing I noticed is Chinese and Americans prefer working for consumer products and services such as game, frontend, leisure and entertainment; whereas, Indians tend to flock at business products such as cloud, server and backend. Hope this helps breaking your judgement. If you didn’t know, a lot of people also complain about Indians, Chinese and Russians favoring the people from similar culture. You are lucky you are Indian in that way. People like Vietnamese, Swedish, Italians, Turkish, Taiwanese, Japanese and Mexicans are minority in software engineering; hence, need to go through tougher tests and limited information sharing.

Microsoft oppensive Jul 22, 2019

I just typed AirBnb on my LinkedIn and Indians and Chinese seem pretty same in numbers. Other Asian names have done undergrad in US which implies they are more likely early Americans. Please don’t discriminate them and call Chinese. Not all Asians are Chinese and quite a lot of Asian Americans are not Chinese decent. China was close until recently and didn’t have many immigrants until recently. It is kind of calling all Asians including Americans as Chinese just because their last name sounds unfamiliar to you.

I worked at Airbnb and did both core values and technical interviews. There is a zealous effort to avoid bias and this post is shit.
