Hello Blind Community, I am DS right now, working on more of application of Modeling, clustering algos. I am interested in switching to FAAG eventually, and was wondering whats the difference between the Applied vs Research roles at these two. Also, i have non-Phd background, so would that be a concern ? thanks in advance!
Research (as opposed to applied or data science) is tough without a PhD
Applied Science at Amazon basically requires PhD + relevant publications. Your best bet is to go for DS/SDE track, and switch to AS at Amazon after proving yourself capable.
So what’s the difference between applied and research?
There are 4 science types at Amazon. Economists, Applied Scientists, Research Scientist and Data Scientists. DS do BI and analytics. Research scientists do R&D ( I think). Applied scientist do machine learning for production and research. I am not sure exactly what the economists do (some pricing of course). For applied scientist you need minimum of a Masters. PhD preferred. Research and data scientist requirements are less stringent.
PhD makes huge difference. Masters from reputable institution works too.
You wanna switch teams huh. Top or bottom?
Not teams, company
