I have been working in Life science domain for over 8 years which is why I know veeva systems very well. Almost all pharma companies are implementing veeva. So when the recruiter from Veeva system had reached out to me via linked in and asked me about my interest in working for veeva as a Senior Implementation Consultant I was very excited. I decided to proceed with the interview process and there was 4 interviews. First of all I was vetted by 3 managers for an hour each and after that they decided to give me an opportunity to work on a case exercise focused on VAULT QUALITY (one of veeva's product). I genuinely worked hard and put in over 40 hours in preparation of this exercise. After I delivered the presentation the team seems impressed and recognized the hard work I had put in. One of them even asked me about how long it took to prepare the presentation and I said 40 hours. The next day one of the manager reached out to me and asked me to provide 3 references. I provided this information and all 3 of my refrence were contacted and obviously they all provided good feedback. So by now all of the hiring formalities had been completed and I was just waiting for the offer letter. I waited for 3 days and decide to check on the update, I was told that they are working on the hiring process and I would be informed of the next steps soon. 2 days later I receive an email saying "After much deliberation, unfortunately, our team did not select you for further consideration. For this role, we are striving for more technical consulting expertise within the SAFETY DOMAIN".( Another one of veeva's product) So as mentioned earlier veeva has many different product offerings. Vault safety and vault quality are 2 of them. The exercise I was asked to work on was QUALITY and not on SAFETY. If you needed to evaluate my skills in SAFETY why would you give me an exercise on QUALITY? If you have not decided to hire me why would you reach out to my references and waste their time? I am not sure what the real reason was for them to reject me but I am glad they I got rejected. I would not want to work for an organization whose hiring process is such as mess. Which also says a lot about company's culture.
Some of the biomedical and pharma companies follow the same. I had similar experience with one of the biomedical startups. I was given data to work on a week before the on-site.
Don’t waste hours in interviews just use the hours apply to companies to increase ur chances. I had same experience put effort in and they rejected me. Avoid such trash companies.
Veeva commonly asks candidates to do an exercise outside the area of consideration. Sometimes it is to evaluate non-domain skills, or hone in on concerns about presentation style or technical depth. Unlikely they just got a template wrong, as hiring managers are directly responsible for most candidate communication, not HR. My guess is you didn’t get approved by senior leadership even though interview team recommended you. Additional references and delay point towards this.

Veeva hiring process is complex. They might have used the wrong template in the rejection email.
But why go throught refrence check ?
My guess is Hiring manager and interview panel liked you but Senior leader might have rejected.
