I make more money than I ever dreamed of, so why am I not happy?
At 10X, like at most biotech companies, there are two tech cultures - that of bioinformaticians/computational biologists, and that of "typical" software engineers. The first group is usually people with PhDs and post-docs; even the new hires tend to be in late 20s/early 30s, many with families/kids. As a result, WLB is well respected (at least at 10X), with people being able to work whenever and wherever with little oversight. The work itself involves lots of statistics (not shitty ML, think real hardcore statistics) with a decent amount of engineering; our stack is primarily Python and Rust. The second group is what you would see in regular tech companies - younger engineers in their early/mid 20s. Still pretty relaxed WLB, stack heavy in Go and some Python. Hope this was helpful, feel free to ask follow up questions.
Which is better paid? More respected?
Computational Biologists are probably a bit more respected, since they are more central to the R&D part of any project. Also having PhD and all. I don't think there would be much difference in pay though.
