I’m currently at Amazon and have a few offers for an internal move. Move is lateral, same title, differrent org . One of the offers I’m considering is a position in the Bay Area. Given this is an internal move, I’m told there are HR rules around comp adjustment to the new state (WA to CA). has anyone done this before? Do you know how much TC bump I can expect to make up for the higher taxes, higher costs etc. in CA? current TC: 281 YOE:13
Usually about a 10% adjustment in base. Maybe a token number of RSUs. It will probably be enough to offset the tax difference, but no more.
This. You'll come out a loser.
Amazon does not provide the best offer even to external candidates in CA that often get more than internal folks, so imagine how worse it would be with 10% more for you to survive in a high tax state.
Thanks all. This is helpful. Sounds like an unwise move.
Comp wise it’s hard to say without the numbers but the Bay Area is a great place to live imo. Weather, access to nature, food and diversity are some reasons - though I know this is a contrarian take on blind these days
CoL adjustments never fully compensate for the difference, so they’re amazing when moving HCOL->LCOL but are awful in going the other direction. If you’re open to a CA move just take the time to interview and switch jobs.
Makes sense. Thanks!
They will entice you with a 10% increase in base and bonus. The real estate expense is more than just that. One would ideally need a 3 times increase in salary to lead a meaningful life in the Bay Area.
☹️
Not enough to make it a good move
