Had a recruiter hit me up for a tempting contract gig at a rate significantly above my base salary and equal to my current TC with stocks. Would be a full remote gig for a year and focus on Walmart Marketplace. Currently at a large tech company that’s non-FAANG experiencing massive layoffs, where the execs are trying to sell to private equity, so I’m looking for anything half-decent - before the rug gets pulled from underneath me. Seeing my current role and company is a burning ship and layoffs are ever-present, would you recommend a lateral move like this, just to get some temporary, well-paid work? Seems like Walmart Marketplace is doing well these days. Content Marketing TC: 130-ish.
marketplace is among the focus areas for the year. I would say take it. There's a good chance it'll continue post one year too if nothing macro changes.
Do you work in marketplace org?
No
This is the focus are this year. You will be fine. Just fyi , you might encounter micromanagement of work in marketplace.
Thank you. My current job is with a big name in tech but is increasingly unstable so I’m looking to bounce before my team is laid off.
Marketplace business - from my experience (not extensive) - can be intense. And as a contractor, if you are not performing well - are way easier to replace than a FT.
Anything sounds better than your current job. But just be aware that Walmart contractors are extremely dispensable. Done with the work you were contracted to do? Axed. They found a better contractor (even marginally)? Axed. You have the slightest performance issues (e.g. poor velocity)? Axed. Macroeconomic conditions deteriorate? Contractors are the first to get axed. I personally would do it but I would also be applying for other roles 24/7. Job market is a shitshow rn

Why does Walmart hire so many contractors
Honestly no idea, but 130k for a remote content creation role isn’t half-bad, especially if you don’t have to deal with cutthroat office politics.
Easy to move out when they are not needed. Projects only last so long and we need more resources to move fast initially (or at least that's what the people up top think, throw more resources at the wall). You don't need an army to maintain them afterwards. The other option is to hire a bunch of FTs and then lay them off when we don't need them or the economy gets bad(der) which is something that...other companies that shall remain nameless are actively doing.
