Recently joined Amazon as a BIE (Alexa Org). Can’t help but worry that my work is not generating as big contributions as some others on the team. WLB has gone for the toss. Haven’t received any negative feedback yet but unable to shake this feeling off. Plus with the layoff rumors going around, I’m always stressed. Its my first FAANG role and I was super excited to start, but now I’m starting to question my move. Have always been a top performer every where I worked before this. Does anyone relate or is in the same shoes? Tc -160K
How many hours are you working now and how many months at new company? I would suggest not to compare with other teammates. You are new and will take time to hit ground running. Give some time to see if you acclimatize to the environment. If things don't change after few months then you might have to start looking for new job that fits you. I don't think company will fire you given that you joined recently.
Oh I have been working 12 hr pretty much all 5 days. I do know if it were any other firm, there wouldn’t have been so much stress of performing at a top level right from day 1. But it looks like the FAANG culture is exactly opp. to that. I wanted to join because I thought it’ll give me the best opportunity to learn. But I didn’t realize that the opportunity to learn also comes with a boat load of pressure to perform.
How are your teammates? If they are helpful, it might alleviate some issues and ask them for help. It doesn't help if you started your new job remote. There is always learning curve with new tools and business practices etc. I would suggest you to give some time and potentially look for any red flags. If you find any red flags then start preparing yourself. Also ask for feedback from your manager to know how are you doing in your job during your 1-1.
Man don’t get stressed out once you get a hold of everything you’ll be fine. COVID situation and wfh makes it worse. Just hang in you would shine.
Aww thanks for the positivity Rooney!
I am going through the same thing, thinking about killing myself everyday, currently seeing a therapist and it really helps.
Hey bibi32! I’m sorry that you are also going through this. But please don’t think about taking any drastic steps. I do feel burnt out atm but I also know if things start looking really bad, I can always leave this firm and move to a new one :) Our life is worth a 100x more than any job !
@Fb Don't stress out too much. Life is worth more than job and there are people who truly care for you. Do the minimum and see where it goes. Better mental health is important to perform well at your job. There are endless opportunities in this world.
Just out of curiosity what do you think you are doing wrong? You just feel like your projects aren't that meaningful? Or are you fairly slow at getting your work done?
I feel like the projects I have gotten assigned so far haven’t revealed any actionable insights that the team can then take and execute.
Yeah I just started as a BIE intern, and I agree. I thought it was going to be more of a product analytics role with ab testing and such. Seems like a lot of the stuff being done is just to display metrics so higher ups have more information. Idk if thats similair for you as well? Definitely seems like it would be easy to burnout in since the work isn't all that interesting or useful.
I feel the same OP. Therapist only did so much; sounds like to me you’re bored.
I’m not bored, I just feel the pace of the team is too fast and the work is pretty vast
Hey OP, what’s your job location Seattle or Bay Area?
You’re now in an org with all top performers, there’s going to be an adjustment period. How long have you been there? It normally takes 5-10 months before you start to get in a groove and really execute in my opinion due to learning your org structure, processes, build a network, and understand your role expectations well. If you’ve been there less than 6 months give it some time.
Yeah I have been here only for 3 months. Though I have realized that the rat race tech culture isn’t very conducive to good mental health. Will try to take things one day at a time. Thanks for your advice!
This. Just give it time, don't expect too much from yourself and don't overpromise, everybody goes through this especially early on in a new company. Your team should understand that it takes like half a year to a year before you are really driving value.
